About Dogwood

Dogwood is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit organization working in the unceded Indigenous territories known as British Columbia.

Dogwood brings people together to transform our democracy, uphold Indigenous rights and defend the climate, land and water that sustain life in B.C.

Our supporters, volunteers, donors and staff value people, the environment, justice and democracy. These shared values shape the beliefs that drive the organization:

  • The people who live in B.C. should have more power over government decisions than corporations, industry lobbies or wealthy elites.
  • The climate emergency is an urgent, overarching threat to ecosystems and communities across B.C.
  • Effective climate action is not possible without decolonizing our society at the same time.
  • The overlapping crises we face do disproportionate harm to people who are already marginalized. Dogwood's work should contribute to fixing those injustices, not perpetuating them.
  • It is the responsibility of non-Indigenous people to repair colonial injustice, return stolen land and reconcile our laws with Indigenous laws and systems of government.
  • The provincial government will and must play a role in tackling the climate emergency and dismantling colonialism. But the current political system is holding us back.
  • Organized people working in collaboration have the power to change what is possible in B.C.

Dogwood can’t succeed alone. Our organization is part of broader movements for social change and climate justice. We believe Dogwood has a unique role to play in changing the balance of power in B.C. through political organizing.

People at Dogwood share a long-term vision of a society that is democratized, decolonized and decarbonized. Where our commitments to each other and the place we live have made B.C. an inspiring example for others.

About the role of Fossil Gas Campaigner

Reports to: Communications and Campaigns Director

Dogwood’s flagship Beyond Gas campaign is working to end fracking, switch buildings from gas to electricity and support Indigenous people defending their land from pipeline construction. As part of the Campaigns and Communications Team, you will play a leading role in a multi-partner effort to erode public and political support for ‘natural’ gas, and confront misinformation and bad behaviour from fossil gas companies head-on.

In this role, you will:

  • Create communications strategies, content and ad campaigns to undermine industry and government narratives about ‘clean’ gas, share the true risks of fossil gas, and counter corporate greenwashing.
  • Develop and implement strategies, including corporate campaigning and online and offline public engagement tactics, to undermine efforts to position fossil gas as a clean solution.
  • Coordinate the efforts of a multi-partner B.C. campaign for a province-wide ban on gas hook-ups to new buildings, including coalition building and coordination, and government relations.

To be considered for this position, you need:

  • Experience campaigning and/or organizing, particularly in the environmental, social justice or labour movements, or political campaigns.
  • Experience developing strategies and/or content designed to influence a specific audience.
  • Commitment to Dogwood’s mission to decarbonize, decolonize and democratize B.C.
  • Comfortable working virtually, in close collaboration with colleagues and other teams inside and outside Dogwood.

Additional Experience and Skills

We encourage applicants to highlight relevant personal strengths, knowledge, lived experience, training or aptitudes that they would bring to this role. One or more of the following would also be considered strong assets:

  • Experience coordinating or supporting cross-organizational campaigns, projects or networks
  • Familiarity with B.C. politics
  • Experience with corporate campaigns targeting specific sectors or companies.
  • Experience using social media and online engagement tools to build an audience or advance a cause.
  • Experience and/or skills in public and media relations, marketing or advertising.
  • Enjoy strategic thinking: considering a problem, analyzing why it’s happening, and identifying steps to influence it and create progress towards our goals.
  • Curiosity and openness to decolonization including personal learning, Indigenous solidarity and/or antiracism work.

Dogwood offers a flexible and rewarding work environment, including five weeks of paid vacation starting in your first year, and health, dental and paramedical benefits. We are currently trialing a 4 day / 30 hour per week workweek (May-Dec 31 2023) where all staff receive full pay. Pending a review, we anticipate making the 4 day week permanent after the trial period.

To apply for this position please upload your resume or C.V. and an application statement on our website. We are happy to accept application statements in written, audio or video form. If you have questions about the application process or online form, e-mail . No phone calls please.

Only short-listed candidates will be contacted. The application process for this position may include interviews and work samples or other exercises to assess relevant skills. The hiring committee aims to make a hiring decision by early July, 2023.

Dogwood is committed to becoming a workplace where people of diverse identities, backgrounds and abilities want to work and feel safe working.
