Job Summary:
Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Human Resources Generalist is responsible for maintaining the day-to-day human resource functions including, but not limited to, onboarding and recruitment, the management and facilitation of trainings and staff development opportunities, various aspects of employee relations and communications, and goal setting and performance monitoring. As an organisation that relies on and values our volunteer team (which includes volunteers, interns, co-op and a variety of other placement opportunities), TWC recognises that human resources pertains to all personnel both paid and unpaid. Therefore, candidates can expect some collaboration with the Volunteer Coordinator and involvement with volunteers as appropriate.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Onboarding and Recruiting:
- Assists in talent acquisition and recruitment process, including candidate screening and assessment, as well as participating in interviews
- Establishes positive relationships with external organizations to expand recruiting opportunities
- Responsible for all aspects of the employee onboarding process and leads new employee orientation ensuring positive first impressions and consistent messaging for all newly hired employees
- Assists with integrating all volunteers (including interns and other placements) to Toronto Wildlife Centre to ensure they are treated as a vital member of the team and helps foster a cooperative relationship between staff and volunteers
- Ensures consistency in the onboarding process for all personnel (paid and unpaid) when appropriate
- Other duties as they apply to onboarding and recruiting
Training and Development:
- Actively participates in continuing education and maintains current knowledge of human resources best practices and employment law
- Keeps track of the employee training process, including training needs assessment, employee development plans, and the measurement of training impact
- Works with Managers to ensure training, continuing education, and career development is ongoing and consistent in order to maximize their potential as a manager as well as their team’s potential
- Assists Managers with the selection and contracting of external training programs and consultants as necessary
- Provides necessary education and materials to Managers and employees including workshops, manuals, employee handbooks, and standardized reports
- Organize and lead TWC’s internal trainings as necessary

Employee Relations and Communications:
- Ensures a positive, professional, and safe working environment at all times, with a focus on both human and animal safety
- Continually works towards furthering the mission of Toronto Wildlife Centre; building a healthy community for people and wildlife
- Works with Managers to implement the best employee relations/communications practices to increase teamwork and comradery in their department as well as between departments, resulting in a high level of employee morale and motivation
- Monitors consistency of team interactions across departments
- Ensures all Managers are adhering to human resources policies and procedures as well as performing all duties listed on job descriptions and assists them in identifying barriers and finding solutions
- Responsible for managing all human resources policies, procedures and manuals and assists Managers in identifying barriers and finding solutions
- Partners with leadership to communicate employee related policies, procedures, programs, and laws
- Organizes staff meetings and events; and assists with similar for volunteers
- Participates in executive, management, and staff meetings as appropriate
- Provides information to the Director of Operations for assessing staffing and other human resources needs for all departments
- Other duties as they apply to employee relations and communications
Goal Setting and Performance:
- Assists Managers with performance management process and bonus structure
- Participates in tracking department goals, objectives, and systems as they relate to human resources
- Monitors the efficiency of trainings, workshops, and teambuilding exercises
Position Requirements:
Education:
- Diploma/degree in human resources management or related discipline
- CHRP and/or OSHA certification an asset
Experience:
- 3 years of relevant experience in human resources role or equivalent
- Previous experience in management role an asset
- Experience working with an NPO preferred

- Proficiency in Microsoft’s Office Suite and basic knowledge of databases an asset

- Requires the ability to spend extended periods sitting and using a computer keyboard
