EHS is a safe haven for thousands of homeless animals each year, providing veterinary treatment, behavioral rehabilitation, care, enrichment, and rehoming. Beyond animal sheltering, we engage with the community through various programs and services to support happy, lifelong bonds between people and pets.

The Role

Reporting to the Manager, Infrastructure, Facilities, and Maintenance Worker will oversee and manage the day-to-day operations and perform essential upkeep tasks throughout our facility. The Facilities and Maintenance Worker will perform a wide variety of activities such as repairs, service work, and cleaning to ensure that our facilities are both tidy and functional. As a reliable and self-motivated team member, this position must have a keen eye for detail as well as manual dexterity and physical stamina necessary for the job.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

Building Maintenance

  • Handling basic repairs and maintenance for the safe and reliable operation of the shelter
  • Pick up, receive, and restock all areas with the required supplies
  • Day-to-day tasks which can include minor carpentry, plumbing, drywall, moving furniture, door hardware adjustments, cutting keys, etc.
  • Conducting routine inspections of premises and equipment
  • Follow safe working practices and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment as required
  • Assist in monitoring inventory and order supplies as needed

Grounds Keeping

  • Operating a variety of standard power tools and equipment (lawn mower, electric hedge clipper, edger, tiller etc.)
  • Adjust, clean, and perform minor mechanical work on grounds equipment
  • Maintain grounds, including garden and yard upkeep, trimming, edging, mowing lawn, collecting trash, snow removal, etc.

Administrative

  • Maintaining maintenance records, and receipts and ensuring proper follow-up of all maintenance contracts as directed by the Manager of Infrastructure
  • Collaborate with a team of workers and other professionals during renovations and facility expansions as required

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Experience in building, maintenance, and operations would be considered an asset
  • Experience with power and hand tools is preferred
  • Training in CPR/First Aide would also be considered an asset

Work is in a facility that contains companion animals such as dogs, cats, rabbits etc.

Compensation & Hours

  • Compensation: EHS offers a competitive not-for-profit compensation package which includes a comprehensive benefits package, and a strong work-life balance.
  • Hours: 40 hours a week; however, is expected to work hours as required to fulfill department responsibilities. Some evenings and weekends may be required.
