Senior cancer program leaders (Chief Executive Officers or designates) from each of the provincial cancer agencies form our Board of Directors. Our Board identifies and addresses implementation issues impacting all Canadian cancer control programs.

The Opportunity

CAPCA has an exciting Executive Director opportunity available for a collaborative, influential, results-driven leader. The position works with the CEOs of the provincial cancer programs across Canada to identify opportunities, establish strategies, and support improvement of cancer care and control within provincial health agencies.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director collaborates with provincial cancer agency members and partners to lead pan-Canadian initiatives that align to CAPCA’s strategic plan. Supported by a small administrative team, the Executive Director will:

Board Operations

  • Serve as the primary contact for the Board of Directors and any associated Board committees.
  • Provide strategic advice and recommendations to the Board on organizational activities.
  • Develop Board meeting agendas, ensuring regular meetings are scheduled and prepared minutes and materials are distributed.
  • Review and approve all material prior to being provided to the Board.
  • Orientate new board members as needed.

Strategic and Operational Planning

  • Participate in strategic planning with the Board of Directors.
  • Develop and implement an operational plan that aligns to CAPCA’s three-year Strategic Plan (2023-2026).
  • Monitor, evaluate and report on initiatives and programs.
  • Identify, assess, and bring forward issues that may prevent the Association from meeting its goals and commitments.

Engagement and Collaboration

  • Engage on an ongoing basis in relationship building activities to enhance and support CAPCA’s role in pan-Canadian cancer control activity.
  • Identify, develop, and foster relationships with key stakeholders ensuring proper consultative involvement and collaboration.
  • Exemplify a strong commitment to working with provincial cancer agency members; ensuring work is aligned with and reflects their interests.
  • Identify areas for pan-Canadian collaboration and facilitate partnership discussion.

Communications

  • Develop and lead communication strategies to support timely and appropriate communication of CAPCA priorities within provincial cancer programs.
  • Coordinate and respond to public, media, and stakeholder requests for information related to CAPCA priorities.

Financial and Risk Management

  • Ensure that appropriate mechanisms and processes are in place to manage CAPCA’s financial resources within the objectives, policies, plans and budgets as approved by the Board.
  • Prepare annual budgets for Board approval, and report on variances regularly to the Board.
  • Seek Board approval for the periodic allocation of financial resources not included in the annual approved budget.
  • Present financial updates to the Board on a semi-annual basis or more frequently if required.
  • Ensure that all invoices are processed in accordance with existing policy.
  • Liaise with the Provincial Health Services authority.
  • Act as the point of contact with the external auditors.

Leadership and Accountability

  • Represent the Association in a professional manner at all times.
  • Provide strong, effective and visible leadership to all staff and consultants.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations ensuring clear direction and deliverables are understood.
  • Manage full-cycle human resources including hiring, onboarding, goal setting, performance management and offboarding.
  • Ensure adherence to CAPCA policies, procedures, and bylaws.
  • Identify best and emerging practices regarding Association governance and member involvement.

Our Ideal Candidate

CAPCA is seeking a proven, results orientated leader who will provide strategic and operational oversight to the Association. The successful candidate will be a strategic, collaborative, influential communicator who has successfully balanced the needs and interests of a wide variety of stakeholders.

The competencies required to be successful in this role would have been obtained through a Master of Business Administration (MBA), accompanied by years of experience working at the leadership level in a non-profit, healthcare or cancer care organization. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

What We Offer

  • Competitive annual salary (range $160,000 – $180,000), to be prorated for less than full-time
  • Flexible work hours based on a 0.8 full-time equivalency (approx. 30 hours a week), to be negotiated with the successful candidate
  • Remote work – ability to work from your home office anywhere in Canada
