Nature & Scope:

Reporting to the Chief Health Equity Officer, the Director will lead Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging strategy and initiatives across YMCA BC.  The Director is responsible for the development and implementation of a new Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging strategy across the association.  The plan will be informed by an external equity audit across YBC, enabling the YMCA to create more equitable outcomes that increase connection and belonging for employees, volunteers and program participants.

 

Major Responsibilities:


Informed by the Equity Audit, the DEIB Director will build a robust strategy and an annualized operational plan to further enable YMCA BC to be an inclusive and equitable organization. The DEIB strategy and operational plan will build on existing strengths, build practices and policies that support equity, while leveraging the knowledge and experience of employees, volunteers, partners and participants.

 

  • Works with the DEIB council to gain guidance, feedback and recommendations on DEIB definitions, principles, commitment statement, policies, practices, approach and formation of the strategic plan.
  • Demonstrates and actions Truth and Reconciliation across YBC. The EDIB Director is committed to ensuring that Truth and Reconciliation will be embedded in all aspects of DEIB strategy, operational planning, program development and our people strategy.
  • Takes accountability for the development, implementation, and evaluation of DEIB training for all levels of employees, program volunteers, councils, committees, and the Board of Directors as needed. This work includes consulting to determine areas of knowledge and skill building, evaluation of external programs, and developing educational and interactive content including virtual applications.
  • Provides advice and support to senior operators on creating equitable and inclusive environments and the development of new programs and services that address key social issues.
  • Providing advice and support to all levels of the organization on creating equitable and inclusive YMCA programs and facilities; and the development of new programs and services from a DEIB lens.
  • Continues to develop a deep understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion issues and builds knowledge across the Association by sharing readings, information and research, and developing materials and resources across different learning platforms.
  • Demonstrates appropriate behaviours in line with our Mission, Vision and Values as reflected in our YMCA competencies; takes a member-focused approach to increase their understanding of programs offered across the Association. Represents the YMCA and the Association in a professional manner.
  • Ensures the health, safety and well-being of all children, youth and vulnerable people in YMCA programs. Commits to the professional responsibility of maintaining knowledge of legislation, policies and procedures, child and youth development and best practices to best serve and protect children, youth, and vulnerable people.
  • Other responsibilities will be included and will evolve with the DEIB action plan implementation and execution in partnership across all operational and functional areas of the association.

 

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Post-Secondary Degree in a related field or equivalent education and or experience.
  • In-depth understanding and critical analysis of DEIB, including but not limited to: privilege, power, intersectionality, systemic barriers, Truth and Reconciliation, and anti black racism.
  • Knowledge of the lived experiences of diverse and marginalized communities including but not limited to Indigenous, and racialized groups, Black, 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, newcomers, and people experiencing visible or non-visible disabilities.
  • Experience working with diverse and under-represented populations including program development and/or project management focused on structural or systemic change and mobilizing groups as it relates to equity.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in a charity, non-profit or collaborative working environment is an asset
  • Knowledge of the BC Human Rights Code
  • Experience at a strategic level with the ability to influence various levels of leadership.
  • A solid reputation as an effective leader who exhibits empathy for employees and a commitment to improvement and results.
  • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Values cultural differences and has experience interacting with members of diverse groups, including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity.
  • Passionate about working collaboratively on diverse teams.
  • Demonstrated analytical and report creation skills; superior presentation and facilitation skills.
  • Computer proficient with proven experience with Office 365
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Reference Check/Vulnerable Sector Search issued no later than six (6) months preceding your start date
