part time - temporary / contract  •  $22.00 per tutoring session

Are you interested in making a difference in the lives of youth who struggle with literacy? The Learning Disabilities Association – Fraser South Chapter (LDAFS) is currently hiring part-time Literacy Tutors to work with students requiring support. Through LDAFS, tutors will be trained in the Barton Reading & Spelling System, a multisensory, systematic, Orton-Gillingham-based approach designed to teach children and youth, ages 6 to 16, with learning disabilities or difficulties to read and spell. Tutoring sessions are 50 minutes long, either online or in person. Sessions are held twice weekly on Mondays & Wednesdays or Tuesdays & Thursdays, with room for flexibility. This is an ideal opportunity for anyone working or interested in working with children and youth in an educational setting. LDAFS will provide tutors with free training and supervision by a certified and experienced teacher.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Through LDAFS, attend and successfully complete Barton Tutor training sessions provided by experienced Barton Tutors.
  • Provide tutoring on an individual basis for 50 minutes per session, twice weekly, using the recommended curriculum.
  • During each session, ensure the child/youth is comfortable and diminish any controllable barriers to their learning.
  • Utilize supplementary material (e.g., games and activities) to create fun, engaging lessons while following the curriculum.
  • Communicate positively and respectfully with the child throughout each lesson, ensuring the child leaves feeling encouraged by the experience.
  • Keep written progress case notes after each session and prepare lessons and goals for the following session.
  • Within tutoring times, provide verbal feedback to guardians on their child’s progress if requested.
  • Prepare progress reports outlining student’s achievements and focus for future sessions at the end of each tutoring term.
  • Maintain confidentiality of your student’s files, including personal and assessment information.

Qualifications:

  • Applicants who wish to train in the Barton Reading & Spelling System must have excellent oral and written English skills.
  • Applicants must be patient, caring, empathetic, encouraging, reliable, punctual, adaptable, dedicated, and possess good organizational skills.
  • Preference is given to those with previous teaching, tutoring, or child-care experience; however, an interest or passion in these areas will be considered.
  • Must have experience or feel comfortable working with children and youth who have ADHD or are on the Autism spectrum.
  • If tutoring online, prior experience using Zoom is an asset, as is working with students virtually, and must have a quiet space with a reliable computer and internet connection.
  • A personal interview and police record check are required.
