As a freelance interpreter on the MCIS roster, you will be required to interpret in community settings (such as hospitals, police, tribunal hearings, schools, etc) between English and/or Afar language.
Candidates must be fluent in both English and Afar. Candidates are also responsible for carefully listening, understanding, and translating spoken statements from one language to another and then repeating the statements in another language.
Reading proficiency is also encouraged as candidates may be asked to read and orally translate short readings, such as application forms.
Soft skills include sensitivity and willingness to support the community by providing a service for vulnerable populations who have linguistic barriers.
Candidates must also be willing to travel either by car or public transportation (or any other means) to the location of the assignments. A number of over-the-phone or video assignments are also available, which can be completed from home.
If this is your first time making an interpretation, we are providing free online training.
We are also accepting applications from fully trained and tested community interpreters.
