The Inuit Art Foundation (IAF) is seeking a Copy Editor to join our Inuit Art Foundation Inuit Art Quarterly Magazine team!

The Copy Editor is responsible for ensuring Inuit Art Quarterly content conforms to the internal IAF style guide. This position is a part-time 7 hours a week position.

This position is hybrid in nature and can be completed from anywhere within Canada. If living in the Greater Toronto Area you will be required to work in our Toronto Office from time to time.

Established in 1987, the Inuit Art Foundation is a non-profit, Inuit led charitable organization providing support to Canada’s Inuit arts communities. The sole national body mandated to promote Inuit art within Canada and internationally, the IAF undertakes advocacy work on behalf of artists and realizes a number of strategies aimed at enhancing the appreciation and interpretation of Inuit art. The Inuit Art Quarterly is the sole magazine dedicated to Inuit and circumpolar Indigenous art. In addition to its role as the publication of record for Inuit artists, it is one of the few sustained platforms profiling Inuit voices to the broader public through published interviews, authored articles and through featured artistic works. The IAQ is an award-winning industry leader in the cultivation and promotion of Indigenous arts writers and is committed to nuanced, dynamic, and multi-vocal writing on the contemporary and historical work of Inuit artists.  

The Role:

A key member of the team, the Copy Editor will be responsible for:

• Editing submitted articles for clarity, grammar and spelling. This includes researching and confirming spelling variations according to Inuit authors’ preferences;
• Liaising with the IAQ editorial team, authors and translator on translated texts as needed to confirm spellings and to ensure translated text has been accurately flowed into layouts at the proofing stage;
• Ensuring that all content conforms to the IAQ style guide;
• Updating and maintaining the IAQ style guide on an ongoing basis, including reconciling issues and questions monthly with the editorial team and liaising with language experts as needed; and
• Resolving style and logic issues directly with the editors and/or authors to ensure final copy has been appropriately reviewed for publication at the proofing stage.
• All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• A diploma or degree in Editing is considered an asset
• Experience in an editing role is an asset
• Excellent communication skills
• Excellent computer skills, including Google Suite
• Interest in Inuit artistic practice
• Strong ability to think critically and prioritize
• Interest in learning and growing professionally

About Us:

The Inuit Art Foundation is an Inuit-led charity providing support to Inuit artists working throughout Inuit Nunaat and beyond. As the sole national organization promoting Inuit art within Canada and internationally, we advocate for Inuit artists to be involved in all aspects of the marketing, promotion, and distribution of their work, as well as fair pricing, and copyright remuneration.

The IAF’s team works remotely and onsite at its offices in Toronto, ON in an accessible, converted heritage building adjacent to the West Toronto Railpath. Our main office is located on the ancestral and traditional territories of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Haudenosaunee, the Anishnaabe and the Huron-Wendat, the original owners and custodians of this land. Today, this place is home to many, including a diverse urban Indigenous community of Inuit, First Nations and Métis. We are proud to have team members from coast to coast to coast.

Status: Permanent, Part Time (7 hours per week)

Salary: $12,000 based on 7 hours a week, plus benefits
