Respite Worker

Respite Workers support children and adults with developmental disabilities to build social relationships, develop personal goals and skills, and participate in recreational activities in the community.

Respite Workers are self-employed – you control how much and when you work! Because this is not a regular Monday to Friday 9-5 type of job, it is often a great fit for students or people wishing to supplement existing income. 

No formal training required, however previous experience working with individuals with disabilities is an asset. Successful Respite Workers are:

  • Responsible, enthusiastic, energetic
  • Able to remain calm under pressure
  • Effective communicators with good conflict resolution skills
  • Willing to learn and receive feedback

Respite Workers must be 19 years or older and as part of our screening process we also require:

  • Physician’s Reference Form
  • Criminal Record Check – Vulnerable Sector, renewed every 5 years
  • Valid First Aid & CPR, renewed every 3 years
  • Work/Character References
  • Driver’s License, Car Insurance, Driver’s Abstract (car preferred, not required)
  • Safety Visit/Home Study (if providing hourly/overnight care in your own home)
