Job Title: Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN)

Based at: Downtown, Edmonton

Reports to: Director of Programs, Homelessness

Hours of work: 40hrs per week, Mon-Fri

Salary: Starting at $36.87/hr

Start date: Immediate

Status: Permanent, Full Time Position

Job Summary:

This position functions as part of a diverse, multidisciplinary team within an emergency shelter/addictions & recovery setting. Community members present with various physical, mental and social health concerns – as well as challenges with addictions. The community health nurse utilizes clinical expertise, critical thinking, problem solving, decision-making skills, and a health promotion approach to provide holistic care. As an RPN, you will use your nursing skills and training to provide medical care, develop mental health programming, advocate for clients and complete health teaching and promotion. You will work to continually increase your knowledge of and relationship with community resources to be able to guide community members to the appropriate facilities to meet their whole health needs and goals.

Within the parameters of your license and scope of practice, you will safely provide hands-on care to community members as able. As a nurse leader, you will use your understanding of evidence-based practices to advise shelter leadership and staff on methods to promote the health and safety of workers and community members. The successful applicant will work to intentionally connect with and build relationships and rapport with community members so as to assist them in identifying and achieving their physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual health goals.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Daily connect with shelter staff and guests to build rapport and connect with clients assessing and working to meet their holistic health needs
  • Establish and maintain effective liaison with Hope Mission staff, current community resources, and other agencies and stakeholders to ensure coordinated services are provided
  • Develop mental health programming
  • Connect clients with community resources and advocate for clients’ health needs
  • Facilitate the development, implementation, and ongoing administration of an effective individualized plan of care in collaboration with the client and other care providers ensuring continuity of care. Monitor and evaluate progress and outcomes.
  • Provide education for chronic disease management and medications as needed
  • Provide basic assessment and intervention of injuries and ailments within scope of practice (including wound care)
  • Respond to emergencies on site and provide appropriate interventions, such as overdose responses.
  • Provide naloxone education to clients who request it and staff as needed
  • Continually grow in personal knowledge of current evidence-based practices in mental health, addictions, chronic disease management, wound care, and caring for vulnerable populations
  • Complete accurate, succinct, and complete documentation to record care given to clients
  • Work with leadership to develop strong policies to promote the health and wellbeing of clients and staff

Minimum Qualifications and Skills:

  • Licensed RPN in good standing and able to practice in the Province of Alberta
  • Able to balance numerous demands and conflicting priorities, strong problem-solving skills.
  • Able to work co-operatively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Able to demonstrate patience and understanding for those with addictions, mental health and/or behavioral disorders
  • Strong computer proficiency
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Has a good understanding of trauma-informed care and meeting clients where they are at
  • Experience in the inner city is an asset but not a requirement

Other Requirements:

  • A letter of reference from a ministry or church is an asset
