ABOUT FOR YOUTH INITIATIVE

For Youth Initiative (FYI) is a community-based charity that has served and advocated for teens and young adults in York South-Weston since 1995. We have recently expanded our efforts to support youth in Oakwood-Vaughan communities with the opening of our second location in 2021. Our mission is to support Black, racialized and newcomer youth to navigate systemic barriers, plan for the future, and access the resources and mentorship they need to thrive.

Every young person's journey is unique, and so are their needs. Our case management model meets young people where they are and helps them progress to where they want to be. Our programs and services are designed to support youth in graduating high school, enrolling in post-secondary education, gaining employment, and preparing for adulthood. To achieve these milestones, we provide support through mentorship and resources in six key areas: educational attainment, workforce readiness, civic leadership, youth justice, newcomer settlement, and advocacy.

WHY JOIN FYI

The needs of the youth in the communities we serve are complex and overlapping. Poverty, community violence, gentrification, meagre access to local employment and post-secondary education campuses, lack of access to rapid transit, and a lack of social capital as new/newer families to Canada all play a role in the programming and interventions we offer to achieve our vision of ending the cycle of inequity. Our approach is anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and seeks to affirm the inherent value and worth of Black, racialized and newcomer youth and young adults. Our success lies in delivering youth-driven, culturally relevant, adaptive programs and services by a passionate and committed team and Board whose diversity of experiences and identities are reflective of those of our clients'.

 AS A RESULT

  • we are prioritizing service excellence during a period of rapid growth and expansion.
  • we believe that equity for historically disadvantaged communities requires access to financial resources + supportive relationships.
  • partnerships are at the center of everything we do, and
  • we advocate at the systems level, while remaining focused on local impact.

OUR VALUES

  • Equity - we promote equal access to life’s opportunities.
  • Respect - we treat each other with kindness, patience, and empathy.
  • Inclusion - we welcome everyone; diversity is our strength.
  • Collaboration - we work together, share, and learn from each other.
  • Integrity - we demonstrate the courage to do what is right, not what is easy.
