Employment Opportunity

Ottawa Riverkeeper is seeking a Policy & Advocacy Assistant to join our advocacy team. 

  • Start Date: June 3, 2024   End Date: August 30, 2024
  • Hourly Wage: $21.95/hr
  • Hours: 37.5 hrs/week
  • Applications will begin to be reviewed as early as January 15th, 2024. Interviews will occur on a rolling basis, until the position is filled.

What you will do

As Policy and Advocacy Assistant, you will help provide detailed research, writing and general support for Ottawa Riverkeeper’s ongoing advocacy work. This will include:

  • Monitoring the current state of watershed issues, emerging issues and government actions
  • Maintaining an internal log of issues briefs
  • Drafting internal policy memos for a variety of timely issues and responding to external requests for information
  • Assisting with administrative duties related to advocacy efforts (such as scheduling meetings, taking notes, preparing agendas, writing briefing notes and speaking notes)

What you bring

You are a strategic professional who wants to advocate for the protection of waterways, ecosystems, and wildlife in the Ottawa River watershed. For further success in the role, you also have

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to stay organized and effective, seek out internal and external data/resources, prioritize assignments, and apply critical thinking 
  • Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality

Other valued skills:

  • Experience with environmental advocacy, community relations, or policy work 
  • A broad understanding of science, regulatory, and policy issues relating to water resources
  • Functionally bilingual (French/English)
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship development skills
  • Ability to manage and cultivate strategic relationships
  • Demonstrated knowledge of legislative, rule-making, and enforcement processes
  • Experience working with the media
  • Regional knowledge and familiarity with the Ottawa River watershed
