Location: Newton Resource Center

Hours: 35 hours per week

 

We are looking for an Advocate to join our Sources Advocacy Programs team! This individual must be eager, motivated, organized, and responsible!

Description of position

Ask an Advocate program provides online advocacy support to organizations serving Metro Vancouver’s homeless (and at risk of homelessness) population. The website content and support focus on assisting individuals who have barriers to accessing basic living needs such as income, medical benefits, and affordable housing. Supports include short tutorials and an Income Support and Tenancy Advocate who is available to respond to questions by email and live chat. Online materials and support cover topics such as: how to deal with an eviction notice; how to prevent problems with your landlord; how to appeal when your benefits application is denied; and when/how to request a crisis supplement. In addition to the online tutorials, the program offers tenancy and income support training to staff and volunteers – Service providers working with the homeless and at-risk of homelessness population.

General Responsibilities:

  • Maintains complete and accurate statistics and records for all project activities.
  • Promotes the project’s activities through workshop presentations and public meetings.
  • Participates in training, team meetings, staff and agency initiatives, meetings and events.
  • Excellent administrative skills and experience in resource development; creation of content for training manuals, booklets, brochures, factsheets and on-line presentations; must be organized and systems oriented.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team environment– includes contributing in a cooperative way to the teamwork environment and upholding the professional code of ethics. Ability to apply tact and diplomacy to deal with sensitive and/or politically charged issues and ability to give and receive positive and constructive feedback

Program Specific Responsibilities:

  • Provides comprehensive housing loss prevention services to marginalized individuals and families at imminent risk of housing loss to maintain their tenancy, access income supports and benefits. Services might be provided both in the office and on multiple partner sites. Service includes providing support, information, referral, completion of forms and applications, written communications on behalf of the client, negotiation and mediation, written appeals and representation at tribunals and hearings.
  • Maintain online advocacy chat services/emails/consultations to service providers. This includes providing support, information, referral, written communications and distributing of support information and resources.
  • Provides tenancy & income support services training online and in person for the service providers/clients.
  • Maintains and develops working relationships with the Ministry of Social Development and other human serving organizations.
  • Maintains complete and accurate reports, statistics and records for all project activities.
  • Promotes the project’s activities through workshop presentations and public meetings.
  • Promotes relationships with project partners, community, other human serving organizations and general public. Participates in community meetings, and other events related to poverty and homelessness.
  • Participates in training, team meetings, staff and agency initiatives, meetings and events.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2 years post-secondary education in related field and equivalent experience in related field.
  • Understanding of advocacy, Provincial and Federal income supports programs and tenancy an asset. Ability to read, understand and interpret applicable legislation and awareness of government processes and procedures required.
  • Effectively utilize Office suite including Excel, Word, Outlook and central data systems
  • Effectively communicate professionally, verbally and written in English
  • Exercise good judgment, sensitive to a diverse client base and ability to deal tactfully with sensitive client issues; strong sense of social justice and strong desire to assist and improve the lives of marginalized people,
  • Non-violent Crisis Intervention Training (Training may be accessed through Sources)
  • Criminal Records check through the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General Criminal Records Review Program Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and driver's abstract

Start Date: ASAP

Salary: $26 per hour
