Works to Work 2024 Summer Internship

Works to Work is a one-of-a-kind leadership and professional development program designed for emerging arts professionals. Participants complete in-class modules while also working to deliver The Works Art & Design Festival in downtown Edmonton. The Works is currently looking for hardworking, enthusiastic individuals to join the team for summer 2024.

Volunteer Administration Stream

The Volunteer Administration Assistant plans volunteer recruitment, orientation, and appreciation events in addition to coordinating volunteer schedules and soliciting donations for The Works Art & Design Festival Volunteer program. This includes maintaining up-to-date databases of contacts and professional communication with donors, recruitment sources, and volunteers. The Volunteer Administration team ensures the smooth running of volunteer headquarters during the festival. Training, team-building and mentoring sessions are a part of the internship.

About the Festival:

For over 37 years, The Works International Visual Arts Society has presented The Works Art & Design Festival—a unique, free event that showcases everything from visual art to cutting edge design, digital art, and new media technology. Running June 27-July 1 in 2024, The Festival advances the development, awareness and appreciation of art and design in Canada and provides artists, designers, and the public a forum for exchanging ideas.

About the Internship:

The paid program includes team building sessions that connect theoretical learning with real-world applications related to producing public art programming. The internship begins in May and runs throughout the summer with in-class instruction and up to 450 hours of practical work experience. Participants will benefit from working with experienced arts presenters while learning in a variety of ways that include peer mentorship, group discussions, collaborative projects, and hands-on experience. Class sessions focus on professional development for individuals interested in a career in the arts and culture sector.

To encourage ongoing skills development, Works to Work allows participants to return summer after summer to progress from the Assistant through to Lead Supervisor level in a particular stream.

Note that changing health guidelines and the resulting program shifts require adaptability and openness from interns. This is an in-person work opportunity. Masking is required for indoor work.

The Works to Work Program accepts applications from students and emerging professionals looking for positions in the art and design field who:

  • Are eager to develop and apply skills in volunteer recruitment and coordination.
  • Thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Are interested in professional and leadership development in the arts and culture industry.
