Works to Work 2024 Summer Internship

Works to Work is a one-of-a-kind leadership and professional development program designed for emerging arts professionals. Participants complete in-class modules while also working to deliver The Works Art & Design Festival in downtown Edmonton. The Works is currently looking for hardworking, enthusiastic individuals to join the team for summer 2024.

Marketing, Public Relations, & Special Events Stream

The Marketing Assistant develops and implements various public and media outreach and communications strategies relating to The Works Art & Design Festival, including media relations, social media, website content and newsletters. The Marketing Assistant acts as media contact, collects metrics and data for organizational reporting, and assists with event coordination. Training, team-building and mentoring sessions are a part of the internship.

Design Stream

Assist with the design of marketing collateral, using technical and aesthetic skills to apply a festival campaign to various print and web outputs. Designers work closely with the Marketing Team to effectively promote and market the festival campaign, design social media content, festival and exhibit signage, and other festival communication and scheduling documents. Other responsibilities may include assistance with website maintenance and tasks related to User Experience Design. Training, team-building and mentoring sessions are a part of the internship.

About the Festival:

For over 37 years, The Works International Visual Arts Society has presented The Works Art & Design Festival—a unique, free event that showcases everything from visual art to cutting edge design, digital art, and new media technology. Running June 27-July 1 in 2024, The Festival advances the development, awareness and appreciation of art and design in Canada and provides artists, designers, and the public a forum for exchanging ideas.

About the Internship:

The paid program includes team building sessions that connect theoretical learning with real-world applications related to producing public art programming. The internship begins in May and runs throughout the summer with in-class instruction and up to 450 hours of practical work experience. Participants will benefit from working with experienced arts presenters while learning in a variety of ways that include peer mentorship, group discussions, collaborative projects, and hands-on experience. Class sessions focus on professional development for individuals interested in a career in the arts and culture sector.

To encourage ongoing skills development, Works to Work allows participants to return summer after summer to progress from the Assistant through to Lead Supervisor level in a particular stream.

Note that changing health guidelines and the resulting program shifts require adaptability and openness from interns. This is an in-person work opportunity. Masking is required for indoor work.
