Volunteer Posting 1038

Board Director
Hive Vancouver Society
Work From Home - Vancouver & Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island & Coastal areas
less than 2 hours per week
closes in 62 days (Tue, 31 Jan 2023)

The HiVE is Vancouver’s longest-standing coworking space that operates as a non-profit society. At the HiVE, our vision is to support and amplify the social impact sector through social cohesion, human capital, and resources that enable our members and partners to thrive.

We are seeking 6 volunteer Directors to build and maintain a Board composed of leaders committed to the HiVE’s vision with a variety of skills, representing the diversity of our membership and the community at large, and who are able to fulfill their governance, legislative, and fiduciary responsibilities. We encourage any member to consider applying, regardless of past Board role experiences or length of time you’ve been a member of the HiVE.

In normal times, though the Board has legal duties as guardians of the HiVE organization (HiVE Vancouver Society), a large proportion of the role involves counseling, advising and supporting the Executive Director. Directors have, in the past, typically dedicated approximately 10 hours a month on such activities as preparing for, and attending, Board and committee meetings, strategic planning sessions, participating in director development, and attending community events. In some special cases, such as periods where there has not been an Executive Director (as was the case for most of the past year), directors have willingly given more of their time to “pitch in” in many other aspects of the daily operations of the HiVE.

Board and committee meetings are generally scheduled during regular business hours, typically at the lunch hour or from 5pm to 6pm, and very rarely on weekends.

Before submitting your application, carefully consider the required responsibilities and time commitment required.

The HiVE seeks to build and maintain a board composed of leaders committed to the HiVE’s vision to support and amplify the social impact sector through social cohesion, human capital, and resources that enable our members and partners to thrive who are able to fulfill their governance, legislative, and fiduciary duties. To ensure diversity of thought, background, and experience, we seek directors who reflect the HiVE membership and the community at large. Recognizing not all directors will have all the attributes and experience set out below at the beginning of their tenure as directors, we want directors that demonstrate a commitment and aptitude to acquire the experience and attributes necessary to make them effective board members.

  3. Demonstrated strategic agility and vision.

  5. Experience working with management teams to realize long-term vision.
  6. Ability to think critically and independently, exercise good judgment, communicate effectively, and foster the creation of positive change.
  7. Orientation to work collaboratively and resolve conflict.
  8. A learning and development focus, with a commitment to regular board and director assessments, and ongoing professional development.
  9. Desire to prioritize the time required to participate in a robust schedule of board, director, and leadership duties.

Board Diversity Statement

The HiVE Board believes embracing diversity involves continually seeking to learn, engage, reflect, and act in order to meet the needs of our members, employees, and communities.

We acknowledge systemic barriers of discrimination and inequity, and power imbalances related to privilege. We recognize we must work to address these issues. The inclusion of people from diverse backgrounds and lived experiences, aligned with the HiVE’s values of integrity, innovation, responsibility, and reconciliation, helps us to be more courageous in our efforts to achieve the transformative change our vision demands.
