The BC Wrongful Death Law Reform Society is seeking a Web Content Marketing Coordinator



This is an opportunity to acquire training and experience in publishing, distributing, promoting, and marketing web content that tells the stories of families affected by wrongful death, as well as the need for legislative modernization, in working on the biggest human rights issue facing the province today. 



‘In Their Name’ is the campaign of the ‘BC Wrongful Death Law Reform Society’. In response to the biggest human rights issue facing the province today, our goal is to modernize British Columbia’s antiquated wrongful death legislation, which predates confederation (1846). Under current legislation, the value of a human life is measured only by the deceased’s future lost income, so long as they had dependents. 



As a result, access to justice has been denied to the families of the wrongfully killed who do not meet this discriminatory criteria. This has affected especially vulnerable groups, namely children, seniors, and the disabled, when they are killed by the careless or intentional acts of another. 



BC is presently the last of all the provinces, including the Yukon, yet to have undertaken this critical legislative modernization to allow for dignity, value, and protections for all its citizens under the law.


When it’s ‘free’ to kill in BC, wrongdoers are not held accountable. This lack of general deterrence holds the province back in innovation of safety measures and protocols to prevent wrongful deaths in the first place.



Website Creation, Promotion, & Marketing History

The legislative reform our Society is seeking has been on the radar of the public, family groups, non-profits, and government since at least since 1995. 


The surviving family members of someone who was wrongfully killed have sought help and support from these various groups and organizations in the past, after discovering that their loved one was worth nothing under the law in BC.

 They have also previously petitioned the government numerous times to no result.

The BC Wrongful Death Law Reform Society was incorporated in 2015 to serve as a central organization of support for families, collaboration with other non-profits, public awareness & education, and pushing for legislative reform.


The website was initially developed as a brochure-style information resource. In the past 2 years it was subsequently redeveloped into an interactive campaign platform for petitioning Members of the Legislative Assembly, as well as sharing and distributing content. The platform utilized is the WordPress Content Management System (CMS).

Our contacts database is supported by the Hubspot Customer Relationship Management system (CRM) and is used to organize, keep records on, and engage contacts by way of email.

The Society also obtained non-profit status with Google and accordingly receives an advertising grant with the Google Ads Platform for ranking content in paid search engine results.

Where the Campaign is At Presently


We've engaged with 85 elected Members of the Legislative Assembly of BC, met with 19 of these MLAs as well as the Attorney General in person, presented at the NDP & Liberal Caucuses, and were introduced in Question Period at the Legislative Assembly, all in 2019.



So far in 2020, two of our videos went viral on Facebook, and have been seen by over 65,000 British Columbians to date (as of May 7, 2020), which has resulted in over 1000 people using our website's automated tool to contact their MLAs.



It's time to pour some gasoline on this campaign by ensuring we engage, educate, and enroll the support of the public to exponentially assist in creating awareness and calls to action for legislative reform. 


We aim to achieve this by further developing our content marketing strategy, publishing new content on a frequent basis, taking further advantage of the Google non-profit grant, search engine optimizing the website, and engaging with our database of contacts via Hubspot CRM.

The Campaign Coordinator, a UBC law student, works directly with bereaved families to be able to tell their stories, in publishing on our website – https://intheirname.ca – sharing on social media, and coordinating meetings with their local MLAs.



The President, a technology marketing entrepreneur, manages the strategy, technology, and marketing of the campaign. The President, who's Father was neglected at a care facility, also serves as the Society's representative speaking to MLAs, media, and the public.



The Vice President, Artist and Author of Heidi Dawn Klompas: Missed Opportunities – a published book distributed to all hospitals and MLAs in the province. She has worked on wrongful death law reform in BC since the passing of her daughter in 1997.



The Secretary, a Senior Lawyer with over 25 years of legal experience.


The Treasurer, a Senior Lawyer with over 30 years of legal experience and Past President of the Trial Lawyer's Association of BC.

Web Content Marketing Coordinator Duties


We are looking for candidate(s) to join our volunteer team, specifically to undertake the following:



#1 Publishing and updating content to the WordPress CMS website. We can provide training and support if you are unfamiliar with the platform.

#2 Utilizing the tools of the Yoast SEO plug-in to optimize the content for indexing and ranking by search engines. We can provide training and support for undertaking this task via the Yoast SEO Academy.

#3 Utilizing the Google Ads platform to create campaigns, ad groups, and ads with corresponding relevant keywords to market the website's content. We can provide training and support on how to utilize this platform. We can also provide further support if you wish to become Google Ads & Analytics certified.

#4 Leveraging Hubspot CRM to manage and engage with existing contacts and to build relationships with organizations and individuals who are willing and enthusiastic for the opportunity to repost our content.

 We can provide training and support for this both in-house and utilizing the Hubspot Academy.

#5 Researching ways to redistribute and promote content via news websites, blogs, forums, and social influencers. Engaging with these key content channels to have the content of the BCWDLRS featured.

Time Investment


As this is a part-time, unpaid volunteer position, and we are seeking a time investment of ideally 8 hours per week.



However, we will not limit your time investment if you are excited and passionate about both learning and obtaining results beyond the timeline and scope that we outline together.

#1 Either a student studying business, marketing, communications, computer science, information technology, OR someone with a minimum of an associates degree background keen on learning about internet marketing and is looking to expand their skills, network, and their portfolio of experience.

#3 Someone who feels passionate about making BC a safer and more dignified place for its citizens, in accordance with modern standards of human decency, which other Canadian provinces, as well as most first-world nations have already adopted.



#4 Someone who's technologically proficient and is eager to learn new skills involving utilizing WordPress CMS, Yoast SEO, Google Ads, Google Analytics, and Hubspot CRM.

#5 Someone who's excited to work in a collaborative team environment with high quality, high performing people, to build lifelong connections with, who will have your back, and act as solid career references.


#6 Results oriented – someone who's excited by the opportunity of being able to say they for example; worked in publishing, optimizing, promoting, and marketing content shared with 100+ non-profits, 100+ media outlets, and engaged with by over 1,000,000+ British Columbians, which ultimately lead to BC's legislation being modernized.
