Purpose of Position

The vision of Wildlife Rescue Association of British Columbia is to continually improve the welfare of urban wildlife. Our mission is to provide leadership in rehabilitating wildlife and in promoting the welfare of wild animals in the urban environment. We run a wildlife hospital located on a single site at the edge of Burnaby Lake. We treat over 6,000 wild birds and bats each year and provide public education through 30,000 calls to our Wildlife Helpline. Our Business Operations department plans, coordinates and oversees all our programs including development, communications, resources and volunteering.

Each year, 300 volunteers participate in a range of positions both on and off site. We are currently seeking a volunteer to assist with the upkeep and maintenance of the site. The Maintenance volunteer role will assist with the implementation of an annual maintenance project plan to maintain our facility and grounds and help prevent future issues. The grounds are used to support local wildlife, programs and house the Administration and Hospital
buildings. Maintenance Volunteers allow WRA to continue to operate at all times, saving dollars in services that can then go directly to care.

All volunteers must be 16 years or older and provide a Criminal Record Check, proof of up-to-date tetanus vaccination and full Covid-19 vaccination.

Qualifications

We are looking for:

• Experience and knowledge in maintenance
• Ability to problem solve and resolve minor maintenance projects
• Demonstrated reliability
• Someone who enjoys routine maintenance tasks
• Ability to complete tasks independently with minimal supervision
• Good team communication skills
• "Handy" and able to safely and effectively complete minor repairs
• Knowledge of how to safely operate power tools
• Access to vehicle an asset
• At least 18 years of age
• Demonstrated fluency in speaking, reading and writing English
• Certification in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, welding, or fiberglass repair an asset

Deliverables

The volunteer is expected to ensure the highest standards of practice are achieved and maintained in accordance with the mission, vision and values of WRA, and to ensure adherence to all policies and legal requirements.
• Perform regular maintenance duties in accordance with our Annual Maintenance Plan under the Supervision of the Maintenance Coordinator and staff.
• Completing maintenance projects within your skillset as necessary
• Regular duties may include:
o Raking leaves and clearing them from enclosures
o Clearing plants and debris from drains
o Maintaining gravel pathways
o Cutting back brush
o Removing invasive plants
o Cleaning, repairing and sharpening tools
o Identifying maintenance needs
o Performing minor repairs
o Prevent and repair holes in animal enclosures, protecting animals from pests
o Assist with installation of equipment
o Working with the Maintenance Team on construction projects such as building sheds, gazebos, shelving units, steps, fences etc.
• Follow Health & Safety protocol and report unsafe conditions to the Health & Safety Committee
• Use communication systems in place for identifying and logging tasks
• Communicate with the Maintenance Coordinator regarding problems, tools, equipment needed
• Recording and logging all hours on MyImpactPage

Time Commitment

All Wildlife Rescue volunteers start with a minimum commitment of 100 hours. Approximately 4 hours per week on a consistent weekly basis. The shifts will take place at Wildlife Rescue during operational hours, with flexibility as to the day and time.
