The Legal Advisor for TAPC is responsible for providing legal guidance and advice to the board of directors to ensure compliance with all relevant laws and regulations. This individual will work closely with the board members to identify potential legal issues, develop strategies to address them, and ensure that the organization is operating within the boundaries of the law.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal guidance and advice to the non-profit board on all legal matters related to the organization
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, including tax laws, employment laws, and any other relevant regulations
  • Identify potential legal risks and develop strategies to mitigate them
  • Assist with drafting and reviewing legal documents, including contracts, policies, and bylaws
  • Review fundraising activities to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations
  • Advise on intellectual property matters, including trademarks and copyrights
  • Stay up-to-date on relevant legal developments and advise the board on any changes that may affect the organization
  • Assist with any legal disputes or litigation involving the organization
  • Provide training to the board and staff members on legal matters related to the organization

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor degree and licensed to practice law in Canada. US Experience with non-profits is appreciated, but not required. 
  • At least 3 years of experience working as a legal advisor or attorney, with a focus on non-profit law
  • Knowledge of non-profit governance and tax-exempt status requirements
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks effectively
