RNFOO is seeking a volunteer treasurer to oversee the financial matters of the charity in line with good practice and in accordance with the governing document and legal requirements.  The Treasurer will report to the board of directors at regular intervals about the financial health of the organization and recommend action as appropriate.

RNFOO is a Provincial organization. Volunteers can be located anywhere in the province. Board meetings are held virtually. Proximity to the GTA is helpful but not required.

General responsibilities of the Treasurer

This is a volunteer position. The treasurer will ensure that effective financial measures, controls and procedures are put in place, and are appropriate for the charity.  Despite the additional responsibility the treasurer has in overseeing the financial matters of the charity, all directors continue to be jointly and severally responsible, and therefore liable, for the administration of the charity.  The Treasurer reports on the current financial position of the charity at each Board meeting which is recorded in the minutes, along with any financial decisions.

The Treasurer will collaborate with staff responsible for the financial management of the charity. As an Officer of the board, the Treasurer has a designated role in overseeing the financial matters of the board and ensuring other directors are adequately informed of financial related issues to ensure good decision‐making.

Responsibilities for the Treasurer:

  1. Oversee the financial matters of the charity:
  • Oversee the preparation of and present budgets, accounts, management accounts and financial statements to the board of directors
  • Ensure that proper accounts and records are kept
  • Ensure financial resources are spent and invested in line with the charity’s policies, good governance, legal and regulatory requirements
  • Lead the development, updating and implementation of financial reserves and investment policies, for presentation to and approval by the Board
  • Act as signing officer

  1. Assume a leadership role on board committee or initiatives related to financial matters:
  • Ensure the sound financial management of the charity’s resources
  • Implement, update and monitor specific financial controls and systems and ensure that they are adhered to.
  • Chair the Finance Committee in line with terms of reference, and report back to the board of directors.
  • Advise on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plan.
  • Liaise with the charity’s staff, where applicable.
  • Contribute to the fundraising strategy of the organization.
  • Liaise with the charity’s designated accountant and auditors, where appropriate. Monitor and advise on the financial viability of the charity.

Qualifications:

Applicants to this role will ideally have experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Professional finance or accounting accreditation (CPA or CPA in progress) is preferred but not mandatory
  • Prior experience in charity setting with exposure to financial reporting and budgeting cycles would be an asset
  • Passionate about enhancing and advancing the academic aspect of the nursing practice in Ontario
  • General monthly time commitment of 8-10 hours (excluding special projects/initiatives such as strategic planning)
