Seniors Driver Volunteer

During the current Covid19 crisis, more and more people are self isolating and unable to rely on supports through friends and families. We are seeking volunteers to support our expanded food and seniors programs for vulnerable clients during Covid19 through several roles.

The Seniors Driver Volunteer supports the Safe Seniors Strong Communities by driving seniors to key appointments, including transportation to medical appointments. Due to risk, this role currently involves some additional protocols (compared to other volunteer roles) in addition to our Covid19 protocols for all volunteers. Please see the following page for these specific guidelines.

Volunteers must be able during daytime hours Monday to Friday (but may give their availability to the program coordinators). Volunteers do not need to commit to a regular shift. Rather the volunteers are booked in an on call basis.

Number of Volunteers Needed:

What are we looking for?

  • Reliable and punctual;
  • Minimum 3 month commitment;
  • Available during day Monday to Friday to be on call (volunteer may indicate availability within these period);
  • Access to a reliable vehicle that meets the current additional protocols for this service - “A sedan is not enough. A van with a second row removed (stow and go option) would be ok if the client is in the 3rd row”. See following page for more information;
  • Clean, current drivers licence;
  • Access to a cell phone and email during volunteer shift;
  • Able to complete volunteer intake that includes criminal record check and Self Assessment Health Check;
  • Ability to follow health and safety protocols related to Covid19 including protocols on following page.

What's in it for you?

  • Mileage covered;
  • Certificate of Volunteering after 30 hours
  • Local reference acknowledging volunteer commitment;
  • Other Volunteer Recognition including annual event and Access to training though out year.

Additional Information:

Guidelines Specific to Volunteer Drivers providing transportation to medical appointments (as provided by United Way, April 30, 2020).

Please find below a set of protocols (or guidelines) for volunteer-based transportation to medical appointments during the COVID-19 crisis.

  • They have been provided by Gary Tam (604-983-6798), Acting Senior Environmental Health Officer, Environmental Health at Vancouver Coastal Health’s North Shore Health Protection Unit.
  • The driver and client need to be symptom free. If they have any flu like symptoms [e.g. scratchy throat] then they cannot be transporting or
  • The size of the vehicle is important. A sedan style car is not sufficient to ensure physical distancing. A van with a second row removed (stow and go option) would be ok if the client is in the 3rd row.
  • The handling of personal belongings such as a wheelchair or walker creates additional risk as does clients who require mobility support.
  • The vehicle needs to be sanitized before and after – access to disinfectant wipes or a disinfectant spray bottle would be required.
  • Both driver and client need to wear a medical rated face mask, gloves, and have access to hand sanitizer.
  • Windows open will allow for fresh air to circulate.
  • The driver should not be driving multiple people without adequate vehicle cleaning in between loads.

Please note, for all volunteer roles we have strict protocols in place to ensure the safety of all clients, staff and community members, including volunteers, participating in this service. A successful criminal record check and screening is required to become a volunteer. Volunteers will be reimbursed for the cost of mileage and personal protective equipment (if required). In most cases, DIVERSEcity will provide PPE directly.
