Join ACTO’s Board and Make a Difference!

The Advocacy Centre for Tenants Ontario (ACTO) is a community legal clinic, funded by Legal Aid Ontario. ACTO works for the advancement of human rights and social justice in housing for low-income Ontarians through legal advice and representation, law reform, community organizing, and education and training. The clinic also provides legal information and assistance to self-represented tenants appearing at the Landlord and Tenant Board through the Tenant Duty Counsel Program. We are seeking Board members with a passion to advance equitable housing policy issues as they impact low-income tenants.

We are seeking candidates to contribute their professional and personal experience to advance ACTO’s mission. The Board is specifically seeking individuals with experience in the following areas:

Current or Past Experience with Housing Precarity

  • Current Renter
  • Non-Profit Governance
  • Management in Unionized Environment
  • Risk Management and/or Finance
  • Human Resources
  • Public and Government Relations

We are also seeking Board members reflective of our diverse clients/community from diverse equity seeking communities (BIPOC, LGBTIQ, people with disabilities, Francophones, people with lived experience of rental housing issues).

We need people who are committed to the vital role of community Boards to ensure service responsiveness and quality, while maintaining public accountability and effective governance. We fill Board positions annually at our Annual General Meeting (AGM) in September and throughout the year if there are vacancies.

ACTO’s structure includes Board members from across Ontario representing staff from the community legal clinic system and the community members who are part of Legal Aid Ontario’s four regions of the province (North, East, Southwest and Greater Toronto Area). There are 5-6 virtual Board meetings a year with additional committee meetings when necessary. The AGM is a full day meeting and held in person in Toronto. Travel, meals and accommodation expenses are covered when meeting in person.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please submit a c.v. and a brief description why you are interested in joining ACTO. We are currently seeking to fill vacancies and will be accepting applications (on a rolling basis) until all positions are filled. Your application and any questions can be addressed to Recruitment Committee, Board of Directors at or by mail to:
