The Council for the Advancement of African Canadians in Alberta (CAAC), operating as Africa Centre, is a non-profit organization that serves the interests of the African descent community in Edmonton.  Incorporated in 2006, the Africa Centre offers programs and services that address the needs of the African descendent community in Edmonton to enable their full integration into the Canadian lifestyle, while upholding and celebrating cultural roots.

Position Profile

The Board of Directors of the Africa Centre is a governance board with plenary authority over the business and affairs of the organization.  Each Director is elected by the membership of the Africa Centre at the Annual General Meeting or at a General Members Meeting for a three-year term.

Committees: Board Directors serve on one of the following standing committees: Governance and Policy Committee, Finance and Risk Mitigation Committee, and Community Strategies and Engagement Committee. Other committees include African Multicultural Community Centre (Building) Committee and Scholarship Committee.

Remuneration: Board Directors are volunteers and do not receive remuneration for their service.  They are however, reimbursed for authorized costs incurred while doing business for the Africa Centre.

Skills and Qualifications:

We require board members who are excited to support the community, carry themselves professionally, and want to see the African descent community in Western Canada thrive. We would be most interested in seeking people from the following professions:

  • Communications and Public Relations
  • Business Administration;
  • Public Administration/Public Policy;
  • Law; Accounting (with an accounting designation);
  • Finance and Risk Management;
  • Fund Development;
  • Education;
  • Social Work;
  • Engineering;
  • Architecture;
  • Property Management;
  • Program Design and Evaluation;
  • Medical Profession; and
  • International Development.

Time Commitment: 3-4 hours for monthly board meetings; 2-3 hours for monthly committee meetings; and 2 or more hours for other occasional board activities. On average, at least 10 hours a month maybe required.
