Landscape Gardener

The landscape and garden are currently maintained by the grounds and maintenance volunteers whose main focus is on maintain the structures on site. One-time projects to clear large areas of brush and invasive species are occasionally undertaken by corporate and community groups, and animal care and maintenance volunteers assist with light gardening duties. The Landscaper Gardener role will oversee the implementation of a landscape design and project plan to maintain our landscape and garden in a native and sustainable manner that is aesthetically pleasing and safe for people and wildlife.


The Landscape Gardener is accountable to Hospital Manager and Maintenance Coordinator for completion of assigned activities and maintaining communication around the design and maintenance of the landscape. The Wildlife Hospital Manager and Maintenance Staff will provide ongoing support and constructive feedback.


Time Commitment

  • Approximately 4-8 hours a week on a consistent weekly basis, with a minimum commitment of 6 months. Hours may vary per week depending on workload. 
  • The shifts will take place at Wildlife Rescue during operational hours, with flexibility as to the day and time. Working from home may be accommodated for administrative tasks.
  • The job may be highly administrative and design at first – leading to more hands on and leadership focused. Would prefer someone who can dedicate more time up font to the project and go down to 4 hours per week.

The Landscape Gardener may be assigned the following tasks:

  • Working with staff and volunteers to identify new gardening projects
  • Creating a landscape design for current and future operations
  • Creating an annual Maintenance plan for the garden/landscape
  • Coordinating and supervising garden volunteers and corporate groups for large projects
  • Assess completion of garden volunteer tasks and provide feedback
  • Completing maintenance of the landscape and garden within your skillset as necessary
  • Assist with creating an inventory and organizational system for garden supplies
  • Assist with creating a communication system for identifying and logging garden projects
  • Assist with creating a list of regular volunteer garden jobs with instructions on how to complete, including whether sign off or supervision is needed.
  • Assist with creating a health & safety training protocol for Gardening Team Members and training them. 
  • Experience and knowledge in landscaping, gardening, horticulture, or a related field
  • Excellent team leadership

  • Knowledge of native plants in B.C.
  • Microsoft office skills
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Demonstrated fluency in speaking, reading and writing English
  • Access to vehicle an asset
  • Able to precure required materials
