Board Member – Pacific Immigrant Resources Society (PIRS)

Call for Board Members

For nearly 50 years, PIRS remains one of the few organizations across Vancouver and the Lower Mainland dedicated to addressing the unique needs and challenges of immigrant and refugee women and their children. We deliver critical programming and services where the need is the greatest. Our programs have empowered thousands of newcomer women to gain the knowledge, skills, confidence and friendships needed to feel at home in our community and to open doors to increased participation and more meaningful engagement in Canadian society.

We are seeking individuals with a passion for our cause, to join our Board and help us achieve our strategic goals. As a board member you will contribute to the governance of the organization, providing leadership, oversight, planning, ideas and networks so that we continue to grow, engage our stakeholders and continually enhance our brand and reputation within the communities we serve.  In return, you get to directly enable critical supportive programs for newcomer and refugee women with a dynamic and committed team.

PIRS recognizes the importance of diversity and works to ensure that there is diversity throughout the organization, including around the board table. We encourage applicants with lived experience of structural inequity to apply, and in particular those who identify as Black, Indigenous, People of Colour, 2SLGBTQIA+, and those living with a visible or invisible disability.

The following are some specific skills that we are looking for:

  • Financial expertise including risk assessment and financial sustainability
  • Capacity building, particularly resource and fund development or fundraising, stakeholder development
  • Community development, government relations, or brand ambassadorship

The following are some of the qualities we’re looking for in a board member:

  • You have an inquisitive mind and a love of learning.
  • You think critically and are comfortable working at a strategic level.
  • You bring experience with and enjoy collaboration and being part of a team.
  • You have strong written and verbal communication skills, are comfortable networking and building relationships.
  • You work from a feminist, anti-oppressive perspective, and are committed to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Time commitment
On average, 6 - 10 hours per month.  Board members are encouraged to attend hosted events and expected to attend monthly board meetings, planning sessions and meetings of the society.
