We are looking for dynamic and passionate individuals to join our Volunteer Board of Directors. We’re hoping to have you on board!

Fire & Flower (United Girls of the World Society) is a local charity empowering girls and non-binary youth aged 10-14 in BC's Lower Mainland through mentorship, community building, and nature connection. We foster radical acceptance, helping participants build confidence and resilience for their transition into adulthood. As the only organization dedicated to girls' rites of passage in Canada, we offer unique programs. Please visit our website for more information about us and our summer programs.

We are currently reinventing ourselves to best support the new direction Fire & Flower is growing in and are currently looking for 1-2 new board of directors to join our team for a 2-year term. We are a casual crew and pride ourselves on being a flexible and accommodating group. We encourage directors to follow their interests and use their skills and passions.

CRA REQUIREMENTS FOR BOARD MEMBERS:

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or belong to a specific class of individuals (such as a protected person under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act)
  • Cannot be in undischarged bankruptcy
  • Must not be employed by the charity
  • Must not receive any direct or indirect financial benefits from the charity
  • The majority of the board members must be at arm's length from each other

 

GENERAL DUTIES

  • Prepare for and attend monthly board meetings (we break for the summer)
  • Provide governance and oversight
  • Support the organization's mission and objectives
  • Establish strategic direction and identify key policies
  • Be informed on Society matters and participate in discussions and decisions in matters of policy, finance, programs, personnel and advocacy
  • Oversee financial management and fundraising efforts
  • Act as an ambassador for the organization
  • Monitor the performance of the organization in relation to objectives and core values Approve the budget and monitor financial performance in relation to it
  • Participate in the evaluation of the board itself
  • Keep informed about community issues relevant to the mission and objectives of the charity Attend and participate in the Annual General Meeting
  • Attend annual Board Retreat (Can be attended virtually)

Community Involvement and connections

Previous Board experience/leadership Nonprofit and charitable experience

Ethno-cultural/racial identity
