Do you have a passion for trains, history, or just want to be part of something special? The Alberta Railway Museumin Edmonton is looking for volunteers to experience and share the rich history of Alberta’s railroads. Whether you’re a former railroader or simply someone who loves trains, there’s a place for you!
The museum is actively seeking volunteers to serve on its Board of Directors starting in January 2025.
Board members serve a variety of roles, from overseeing heritage rail operations and restoration activity to governance and community outreach. Many of the museum's members are railway pensioners or current employees; their "inside" understanding of the railway industry is especially treasured and has helped the museum grow and delight visitors over its 50+-year history.
Board members can expect to spend about 10 hours a month on museum activities -- building camaraderie at the same time as a strong future for the organization.
All potential board candidates will go through a committee review process, with a slate of finalists submitted for the organization's annual general meeting in late January.
We have a variety of other roles in which you can make a real difference:
- Restoration & Preservation: Help restore vintage locomotives, cars, and other railway equipment. Whether you’re handy with tools or eager to learn, there’s a spot for you.
- Railway Operations: If you’ve got experience with trains or want to learn how to become a rail operator, we’ll train you to be part of the museum’s train or speeder rides during our summer operating season.
- Administration & Archives: Assist with maintaining the museum’s history and help with communications and public relations.
- Maintenance: Help us keep the museum grounds and buildings in top shape, including track maintenance and general upkeep.
Why Volunteer?
- Make a Difference: Help preserve Alberta’s railway history for future generations.
- Stay Active & Learn: Work alongside a passionate group of people, learn new skills, and enjoy hands-on projects.
- Recognition & Support: Volunteers are valued, trained, and acknowledged for their efforts in maintaining the museum’s success.
