Looking to get involved with a non-profit that combines art and activism? Interested

in supporting filmmakers who are creating change in the world? If so, we are looking for a Secretary to join the Reel Causes Board of Directors. 

 

Reel Causes is a Vancouver-based non-profit that partners with filmmakers and Canadian

causes dedicated to addressing global social justice issues. 

 

We host five events a year: film screenings followed by Q&A sessions to educate and inspire our community, providing a forum for authentic conversation around the issues that affect us locally. During COVID-19, we have transitioned to online events. In addition to the core duties listed below, the Secretary is invited to participate in film selections, attend partner events on behalf of Reel Causes, and engage  community members and organizations.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Keeps copies of the organization’s bylaws.
  • Keeps lists of officers, Board Members, committees and General Membership. 
  • Notifies Board Members of meetings. 
  • Keeps record of Board attendance. 
  • Makes sure that there is a quorum at Board meetings. Keeps accurate Minutes of meetings. 
  • Records all motions and decisions of meetings. 
  • Signs Board Minutes to attest to their accuracy. 
  • Records all corrections to Minutes. 
  • Keeps copies of Minutes of both Board and committee meetings. 
  • Keeps accurate record of Executive Committee meetings. 
  • Distributes copies of Board Minutes and actions to Board Members promptly after meetings. 
  • Distribute copies of Executive Committee Minutes and actions to Executive Committee Members promptly after meetings. 
  • Signs official documents of the organization as required. 
  • Make sure members are notified of Annual General Meetings. 
  • In the absence of the President, will chair the board meetings

Overall, we’re looking for enthusiastic individuals who are self-motivated and interested in film, social justice and community issues. Ideally, candidates will have arts, non-profit, or previous board experience.

 

In terms of your commitment, we ask for:

 

  • Two hours per week for (self-directed tasks)
  • One evening per month for board meetings (excluding July/August)
  • Five screening/panel events per year at SFU Woodward’s downtown
  • A two-year commitment
