The Island Deaf and Hard of Hearing Centre is the only non-profit agency of its kind on Vancouver Island. We provide leadership, innovative solutions and services through engaging and educating communities, strengthening families, and fighting isolation. Some of our services offerings include hearing health support for at-risk adults, assistance with job searching and community social events for the Deaf community.
Below are some volunteer opportunities that are available within our organization:
Computer Skill Sharing: Working with a clients one-on-one through Zoom, or in our office teaching basic computer skills. With all these Zoom meetings and online service offerings our clients are finding they’d appreciate someone showing them the basics of emails, word processing ect. IDHHC would provide a general rubric to follow to help guide the training. Time commitment would be for 1.5 hours a week for 4 -6 weeks.
Computer Refurbishing: Setting up donated laptops and tablets so that our clients can use help them access services online. Preparing devices with necessary applications The volunteer commitment would be 1-2 hours, once a month.
Reception: Answering phones, taking payments and answering questions about Hearing Health Services. Assisting in administrative tasks and interacting with clients coming in for hearing health services. Time commitment is flexible.
Sound of Change: Refurbishing donated hearing aids, cleaning and sorting relevant equipment. Attention to detail is key for this role. SOC clients can’t afford to purchase new hearing aids and they are so grateful to receive refurbished ones.
Community Companion: Meeting with Deaf individuals via Zoom to assist clients with participating in recreational activities, socializing or helping them meet identified learning goals. Extensive experience communicating in American Sign Language is required. Time commitment: 1 hour a week for 3 – 6 months.
