Canadian Centre for Men and Families - Ottawa Branch
Ottawa area
2 to 4 hours per week
closes in 8 days (Sat, 7 Aug)

The Canadian Centre for Men and Families - Ottawa Branch is currently looking for a facilitator to lead one of our signature programs. SOFA or Survivors of False Allegation is a program that supports men who have been falsely accused by a partner, spouse, ex, etc. This program offers a peer support environment where people who may have gone through the same situation offer insight on how to navigate one's emotions, cognitive well-being, legal advice etc.

Our clients for SOFA are or have been accused of various criminal activities such as: molestation, domestic abuse, security assault, fraud etc. It is important to acknowledge that of course, not all are innocent or as innocent as they say, though many likely are. Regardless of innocence or not, it is not our place to place judgment or form an opinion to any degree on their situation. Our role is to create a safe environment and comfortable space for each client to participate and share their experiences and stories.

A facilitator must be able to do the following during sessions:

  • Introduce themselves before each session where newcomers are present.
  • Highlight how the facilitator operates and runs their session.
  • Does not call on any individual to share but privately via chat, reach out to newcomers to ensure they are comfortable sharing.
  • Utilizing the raising hand option in zoom.
  • Time management.  This is ensuring clients are not sharing for longer than is considered fair for other clients. There are exceptions to this rule. If a client is in emotional Distress or they are new and clearly need the extra time (other participants will likely encourage the newcomer to continue as they need it).
  • Be able to read the energy of the room. facilitating can be challenging when the conversation becomes stagnant. It is important to be able to effectively transition between topics or conversations when this happens.
  • Facilitators do not give advice to any degree.
  • We are here to validate, use active listening skills, paraphrasing, and other techniques.
  • Discretion is held in the highest of regards.

Other Tasks include:

  • Management of the program's email account.
  • Intake of new Clients to the program
  • Participant Tracking
  • Light Paperwork (Knowledge of how to use Google Sheets, Docs, Drive, etc)

  • Bilingual is considered an asset as many of our participants are francophones, however, it is not required.
  • Have some past experience running programs for adults.
  • Either working towards or has a diploma, degree or certificate in some type of social science or health-related field, such as but not limited to Therapeutic Recreation, Counselling, Life Coaching, Client Management, Case Management, Health Services Management, Social Work, Social Services etc. Not required but is considered an asset.
