PeaceGeeks is an international tech non-profit based in Vancouver, Canada and Amman, Jordan that creates digital tools to support greater connection, peace and safety for those who have been displaced.

 

Founded in 2011, PeaceGeeks has grown from a grassroots volunteer group into a non-profit leader in building technology for Peace. For digital innovation to be an effective tool for social change, there is a need for tech that centres community-led practices and honours the lived experiences of migrant and displaced communities. This also means identifying and repudiating "innovation" that reproduces racism and oppression.

About this Role

 

PeaceGeeks is recruiting a Volunteer Marketing and Communications Coordinator to support the PeaceGeeks Canada team with strategy, marketing, and writing for our social media platforms. The Volunteer Marketing & Communications Coordinator works closely with the Community Engagement Officer and Executive Assistant to keep social media channels updated and brand-focused, and will seek out new social media and marketing avenues to connect with audiences.

The Things You Love Doing

  • Implementing and executing marketing and public relations plans to promote current projects 
  • Managing ongoing online marketing strategies and social media presence on social media accounts (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn), email, website, etc.
  • Working with designers, other team members and volunteers to oversee the creation of marketing materials, ensuring they are consistent with marketing strategies and goals, and maintaining an inventory of marketing collateral  
  • Advising on and implementing advertising strategies, including print, video, and overall messaging
  • Writing press releases and other communications including blog posts to promote PeaceGeeks’ work and brand
  • Elevating PeaceGeeks’ work by developing key marketing and communication strategies that highlight our impact and engagement in the community
  • Identifying and developing strategic partnerships with traditional and non-traditional media outlets
  • Measuring and reporting on impact and outcomes of marketing and communication activities and campaigns 

The Things You Bring To Us

  • Education in Communications, Marketing, or an equivalent professional qualification
  • 1 year of marketing and/or communications experience
  • Proficient and comfortable with social media management including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, TikTok
  • PR experience a benefit
  • Knowledgeable and familiar with online technology including Google Drive and Slack. 
  • Passion for learning  about barriers faced by newcomers to Canada; past experience working in an NGO, non-profit or community organization is an asset
  • Graphic design skills are strongly desired
  • Comfortable adapting to a constantly changing work environment
  • Creative and analytical thinker
  • Familiarity with Salesforce/CRM is an asset
  • Familiar with content marketing and social media marketing tools
  • Takes initiative and can start and complete tasks with basic direction
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize work to meet deadlines
  • Proven excellence in  written, visual, and verbal communication skills

Start Date + Time Commitment

This is a part-time fixed-term volunteer role (approximately  1 year) that would ideally start mid-July, 2021 with the possibility of extension. The expected time commitment is approximately 3 to 5 hours per week and is flexible based on the volunteer’s schedule. 

Location

The volunteer will work remotely from home and is welcomed to work at the PeaceGeeks office based on its availability. The PeaceGeeks office is located at the HiVE co-working space.
