Community Storyteller
Converse and Cook
Work From Home, Edmonton area
flexible / as needed
closes in 6 days (Sat, 25 Sep)

Do you have an interest in creative writing and publication? Do you enjoy hearing stories from the community and are a foodie at heart? If so, you might be just who we’re looking for!

Converse and Cook (see https://conversecook.com/ or @converseandcook on Instagram for more information) is a 100% volunteered powered non-profit organization located in Edmonton, Alberta. Our mission is to build social spaces where individuals are empowered to explore their connection to food and their community by creating meals and dining together. One of the ways we’ve done this is through creating community-wide cookbooks to share the rich stories and histories of the people who live in our city, and what food means to them. The previous cookbook we created was centred around sharing stories and recipes of the University of Alberta campus community, including students, alumni, faculty and staff.

Currently, Converse and Cook is interested in telling the story of how various Edmontonians are being resilient and keeping connected during this pandemic by creating an Edmonton community wide cookbook focused on comfort food. Through cultivating these stories and recipes, we will be able to capture the history of what is happening in Edmonton during this time, while also providing a source of comfort and hope to those feeling isolated and disconnected in our city.  This cookbook is being funded in part by Edmonton Heritage Council.

The Community Storyteller role:

In this role, you’ll be supporting our organization by doing interviews with Edmonton residents and local businesses about their favourite comfort foods and how the pandemic has influenced their ability to build community. You’ll also be responsible for writing up your piece and working with our team to ensure its publication in our cookbook. Note: multiple positions available.

What we’re looking for in the ideal candidate:

  • Strong interview and writing skills (previous experience is an asset)
  • Knowledge of facilitating focus groups (previous experience is an asset)
  • Good knowledge of Edmonton landscape
  • Ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to pick up and work within a pre-existing project
  • Ability to incorporate feedback
  • Proactive in asking for support
  • Interest in community building and food

Time commitment:

  • A minimum of three interviews (typically our volunteers spend around 1-2 hours to set up and do one interview, 1-2 hours to write up one interview, and 1-2 hours workshopping the write up with the interviewee).
  • This position starts October 1st and ends January 15, 2021.

What we’re offering you:

  • Training- we’ll offer basic training on our organization, the cookbook process, the writing style, our focus group approach and interviewing guide. Our process is flushed out so you won’t be starting from scratch  (i.e., interview guide and write up style have been established).
  • Mentorship- as it’s within our capacity, we’ll try to provide mentorship and opportunities to help you develop your skills.
  • An opportunity to build connections within the Edmonton community through collaborative story-telling and sharing (a great opportunity to connect with Edmontonians from all walks of life).
  • The opportunity to have a publication under your belt (it’s a nice addition to any resume, CV or portfolio).
  • A free copy of the cookbook and an invitation to our launch party (2022 date to be determined)
  • A letter of reference

Location:

  • This position is mostly remote. There may be an opportunity to do some in-person interviews with COVID protocols in place.

Remuneration: This is a voluntary position
