Treasurer, Board of Directors, John Howard Society of Ottawa

The John Howard Society of Ottawa (JHS-Ottawa) is a not-for-profit, charitable organization with a strong history of improving community safety through helping individuals, and families, who are at risk of, or have come into conflict with the law. Over the years, we have moved from a focus on male, ex-offenders to also encompass a broad suite of programs and services for young people, people experiencing homelessness, and those experiencing mental illness or substance abuse problems.  Our work includes the provision of prevention and intervention services, employment and literacy, as well as advocacy, public education, and strong community partnerships.

JHS-Ottawa is seeking a dedicated Treasurer to join its long-serving and highly motivated Board of Directors.  The Treasurer will play a key role in providing financial guidance and oversight to a dynamic and growing organization with exceptionally strong financials.  The Board of Directors oversees an Executive Director and a 220+ staff team, spread across eleven offices and residential projects. The organization is projecting revenues of over $16 Million in 2022-23, most of which comes from the Federal Government, the Government of Ontario, and the City of Ottawa. The candidate should have a background in banking, accounting, business, or a related field.

The Board of Directors is comprised of an elected President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer, and up to 16 Directors.  It is a congenial and diverse group drawn from a wide range of professional backgrounds, but with a common desire to promote safe and resilient communities. The Board meets once per month between the months of September and June (not during December).

The Treasurer also leads the quarterly Finance and Central Services Committee meetings. This Committee hears from management and advises the board on areas including the annual independent audit, monthly financial results, IT infrastructure, insurance, and HR. As the organization does not engage in external fundraising, there are no expectations to raise funds or attend events on behalf of the Board. No remuneration is provided to Board members.
