Who we are

At the Pembina Institute, it’s all hands on deck and it has been for the last 40 years.
Our 55+ person team, distributed across the country, are passionate and dedicated, but we don't sweat the small stuff. We’re too busy tackling one of the most important issues of a generation: Canada’s clean energy transition.

In that transition, we don’t leave anyone behind, and believe each member of our team plays a critical role in achieving our goals. We ensure equity but promote individuality. We lead with curiosity — challenging our own ideas and limiting beliefs, being open to diversity of thought and opinion. We use evidence-based thinking to inform our recommendations to decision-makers and understand that to make long-lasting changes, we need to take a practical approach when collaborating with others.

Our commitment to responsible development, and our “tough, but fair” approach, using research, consulting and convening, gives us credibility with decision makers whose actions today are setting the direction for the planet. Are you ready to join us?

Meet the team

The Communities and Decarbonization policy team focuses on enabling effective energy use in buildings and vehicles across Canada, and advocates for effective climate and energy policies and for regulatory improvements to prioritize these goals. We also consider the people, exploring the impact of energy policy on residents, ratepayers  and workers.

The opportunity

We are looking for a Senior Communications Lead to join the Communities and Decarbonization Group, which encompasses three programs: Buildings, Equitable Transition, and Transportation.
We’ll lean on you to lead media relations, supporting our experts through engagement with reporters and editors. You can write and edit at a professional standard, with a strategic understanding of how to convert program goals into compelling communications products. You are a team player with strong interpersonal skills, positive energy, a high degree of organization and ability to thrive in a fast-moving environment.

Your key responsibilities

  • Offer strategic planning to support the design of communications initiatives for national and provincial priorities.
  • Deliver ongoing communications project work to meet strategic communications planning objectives, producing media and stakeholder outreach materials and planning and guiding staff.
  • Write media releases, statements, op-eds, blogs, and elements of reports, and provide proofreading and editing to the team (copy, technical, style), ensuring deliverables are consistent with the Pembina Institute’s quality standards and branding.
  • Act as the first point of contact for journalists on policy priorities by fielding phone and email requests in relevant time zones, as well as coordinating interview logistics.
  • Proactively build and maintain relationships with key reporters and build the Pembina Institute’s profile in Canada and at the provincial level.
  • Maintain accurate contact records in Salesforce for media related to assigned priorities.
  • Participate in regular communications planning and co-ordination meetings, collaborating on messaging, framing, strategy, marketing and outreach to target audiences/influencers.
  • Contribute to the research, development and maintenance of a comprehensive set of communications skills and tools to support the organization’s communications projects.

What we’re looking for

You have experience developing and executing communications strategies and plans. You have familiarity with the national and/or regional media markets relevant to the priority area. You have a high degree of attention to detail, a commitment to personal excellence and a superb command of the English language in reading, writing and speaking. Your interpersonal skills are strong, and you exercise tact, discretion and sound judgment with ease.

You also have:

  • Three or more years of work experience in communications; seven or more years of work overall in communications, policy, clean energy, marketing, journalism or related field.
  • Post-secondary education in communications, marketing, media relations or journalism..
  • Proven skills and experience in media relations, digital engagement and using social media to build community and/or campaigns, and technical and copy editing.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of CP style and academic grammar and style conventions.
