Position Summary

The Employment Counsellor provides life skills guidance and defined support (as noted in job functions) to individuals with a mental illness and/or other disabilities (e.g. concurrent, dual diagnosis) living in the community. The intent is to ensure client safety and to assist individuals to become self-sufficient in the community in keeping with the principles of recovery.

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Assists service users to identify, evaluate, and achieve personal vocational goals and overcome barriers, which have or may interfere with employability.
  • Supports service users in the pursuit of academic upgrading or vocational opportunities.
  • Develops partnerships with local employers, employment services, community training programs, and social agencies for the provision of employment opportunities.
  • Develops and implements promotional material and presentations to encourage involvement in the program that targets participants, businesses, organizations, and referral sources.
  • Works with businesses and social agencies in developing unpaid training opportunities for participants.
  • Participates in the intake and referral process and ensures proper documentation and files are maintained and up to date for each individual.
  • Inputs all information into required data systems.
  • Discusses challenging individuals with the Program Manager and the team; participates in case conferences and progress reports with the members of the team.

 

Essential Job Requirements

  • Successful completion of a university undergraduate degree program in the human service field or accredited community college diploma in the human service field.
  • 2 – 3 years of employment experience in the mental health field.
  • Relevant registration with a regulated body is highly preferred.
  • Minimum Level 1 Behavioural Competencies (Canada’s Substance Abuse Workforce) for all Support and Outreach positions.
  • Certified in the following safety courses: Crisis Intervention (i.e. NVCI, Safety Care, CPI or Safe Management), Standard First Aid – CPR C - AED, Suicide Prevention (ASIST), Mental Health First Aid, and Concurrent Disorder Support.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and organizational skills.
  • Verifiable computer and technological proficiency, including the use of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Must have access to a reliable personal vehicle.
  • Current valid Class ‘G’ driver’s license.
  • A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening (Police Check).
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination or verification that you are unable to be vaccinated.
  • Actual life experience and/or lived experience with mental illness or addictions would be considered an asset.
  • Bilingualism would be an asset.
