Finance Manager

Full-Time, Non-Unionized Position

For 50 years Nellie’s has been providing shelter and support for marginalized women and their children in the Greater Toronto Area. We are mandated to operate programs and services for women and children who had or are experiencing violence, poverty, and homelessness. Nellie’s works to lessen homelessness for women and their children whether the cause is family violence, mental health, or any other reason that results in dealing with the impact of trauma. In addition to providing shelter, our programs are designed to reduce the isolation that often comes with abuse.

Our core operations involve our 38-bed emergency shelter for women and their children who are homeless or escaping violent situations. In addition to our shelter, Nellie’s operates Community Support and Outreach programs that provide aftercare support and follow-up services to women and their children after they leave the shelter, as well as transitional housing support for women living in the community who are homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless.

The Manager, Finance, Human Resources and Operations works under the general supervision of the Executive Director and provides leadership in the management of financial and administrative functions including financial management, financial systems. Develop and implement internal systems and processes to improve effectiveness and efficiency in the organization and lead organizational improvement projects.

Job Summary and Description

  • Provide strategic financial advice and planning based on market trends and investment opportunities.
  • Coordinate the timely preparation of annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Develop and forecast relevant budgets and reporting capabilities to support financial decision-making.
  • Assist in preparing funding proposals and reports for grants, ensuring accurate financial data.
  • Develop and revise financial policies and procedures.
  • Lead in the development, implementation and monitoring of financial policies and procedures to enhance organizational effectiveness and cost efficiency.
  • Oversee accurate accounting and recording of all financial transactions, including revenue, expenses, assets, liabilities, and funds.
  • Manage day-to-day accounting operations, including financial reporting, general ledger maintenance, receivables, payables, account analysis, and cash management.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, CRA, and other regulatory requirements in financial reporting.
  • Prepare, review, and deliver timely monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, and annual financial statements.
  • Prepare long-term financial plans, including scenario analysis, financial modelling and identification of metrics.
  • Plan, prepare, and coordinate year-end audits.

Risk Management

  • Ensure that policies, procedures, and systems establish a robust internal control and risk management environment.
  • Verify sufficient insurance coverage for all organizational aspects.
  • Conduct periodic reviews of the risk management framework and provide quarterly risk assessment reports.

Human Resources

  • Manage and support finance and administrative team members, providing guidance and direction to ensure effective performance.
  • Conduct regular supervision and provide feedback to team members.
  • Foster a positive work environment that encourages teamwork, collaboration, and professional development.
  • Address staff concerns and conflicts promptly and professionally.

General

  • Adheres to all policies, procedures, guidelines, routines, and requirements of Nellie’s.
  • Maintains cooperative work relationships and actively participates in the agency’s overall operation.
  • Contributes to team building at Nellie’s by attending and actively participating in meetings and events.
  • Depending on the agency’s needs, prioritization of outlined responsibilities may be necessary, in consultation with the Executive Director.
  • Occasional evening, weekend, and overtime hours may be required for Board Meetings, on-call duties for essential services, and representing the organization at public events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field. Advanced degrees, such as a Master of Business Administration (MBA), or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation are preferred.
  • Proven experience of at least 5 years in financial management, accounting, or related roles, preferably in the non-profit sector.
  • Strong knowledge of financial principles, practices, and regulations, including GAAP, and other relevant financial regulations.
  • Experience managing in a Unionized environment is considered an asset.
  • Proficiency in financial software and tools.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and communicate information to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, with experience in managing and developing finance teams.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in financial reporting and analysis.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities, work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.

Compensation: $65,000 to $75,000 annually, commensurate with experience.

Hours: 35 hours per week. Monday to Friday, but may vary as needed (this may include evenings and weekends)
