Job Position: Health Promotion Specialist
Department: Health Services
Status: Full-Time – 35 hours per week(One-year contract with the possibility of an extension)
Location: Mississauga & Brampton
Compensation: $26.00 per hour plus benefits

Position Summary:

Under the general guidance of the Manager – Health Promotion Programs, the incumbent will provide culturally specific community outreach, education, information and promote awareness and safety including supporting community health promotion, education and vaccination promotion initiatives.

Responsibilities and Duties: (but not limited to)

* Assist in the development and delivery of a variety of health promotion programs/initiatives within the community and internal programs including culturally responsive outreach, education and health promotion initiatives.

* Coordinate a range of health promotion events and activities to engage and educate the community.

* Create, develop and maintain a range of online resources/media related to health promotion.

* Assist in the development of an ongoing social media presence promoting community health and wellness.

* Facilitate a range of health promotion workshops/ information sessions (in-person and online) within the community and with religious organizations, schools, community groups, seniors’ groups etc.

* Assist in developing and maintaining community partnerships and corporate collaborations to promote and enhance health promotion programing and services.

* Conduct research, identify emerging trends and best practices, and make recommendations to ensure health promotion activities meet the needs of the community and clients.

* Respond to community members’ queries and concerns (telephone, voicemail, email, and in-person) regarding a variety of health promotion topics and provide strategies and resources to support community wellness and education.

* Facilitate referrals to internal and external partners, other professionals, services, or community resources appropriate to community members’ identified needs using a case-based management approach.

* Work closely with internal and external partners to streamline service navigation pathways addressing barriers to accessibility.

* Prepare and submit statistical and progress reports as required.

* Ensure effective communication with all program participants, caregivers, staff, student placements and volunteers.

* Train and supervise volunteers and oversee student placements as assigned.

* Participate in staff and team meetings, and professional development opportunities as required.

* Adopt safe work practices, reporting unsafe conditions immediately.

* Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications and Skills:

* Post-Secondary education in health promotion, health studies and/or health sciences and prior experience in health promotion, community engagement, health communication, policy development, planning, implementation and evaluation is required.

* Demonstrated ability in identifying priorities for targeted health promotion initiatives by applying epidemiological, behavioural and socio-demographic data.

* Critical understanding of theoretical approaches and determinants of health strategies required for health promotion activities and interventions.

* Strong understanding of institutional and other systemic barriers and how they impact individuals/communities and access to services.

* Experience developing and delivering presentations and workshops to diverse audiences.

* Experience with developing plans to implement program goals, objectives, evaluation, and implementation steps.

* Demonstrated ability conducting research, evaluations and assessments, including analysis of statistical data and trends.

* Well-developed research, reasoning, analytical and problem-solving skills.

* Strong knowledge and understanding of community resources of the Region of Peel.

* Ability to mobilize people at the grassroots; strong networking skills.

* Sensitivity to people from different socio-economic backgrounds with an equity lens.

* Self-directed, self-motivated, with a positive attitude and works independently as well as collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team setting, and with community and corporate partners.

* Ability to prioritize, multi-task and adjust to shifting priorities.

* Excellent time management, organizational skills and data/record keeping.

* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including a demonstrated ability to express ideas effectively both verbally and in writing.

* Ability to communicate in a second language an asset (Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, Tamil, Arabic, Dari, Pashto).

* Must be Proficient in MS Office Applications; Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook and Internet and databases.

* A high degree of conflict management skills to effectively deal with others in hostile situations, using appropriate interpersonal styles and methods to reduce tension or conflict.

* Ability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends and from any Indus work-site and within the community.

* Valid Driver’s License with reliable transportation is required.

* Successful candidates must provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check prior to commencing employment.

* Indus’ mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy that requires all employees be fully vaccinated by a Health Canada approved COVID-19 vaccine has been temporarily suspended. Currently new employees will not have to show evidence of vaccination. Indus reserves the right to reactivate this policy at its own discretion based on Public Health recommendations.
