FTE  0.5 to 1.0 

LOCATION Stettler, Drumheller, Coronation, Camrose and surrounding areas. You will work out of one or more locations, travel required.

 

THE ROLE

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Specialized Criminal Justice Navigator directly supports individuals and families with information, support, court preparation and accompaniment through the police and courts systems in Alberta. This position may be part time or full time, and ACAA is seeking applicants from across the region.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Client Supports:
    • Telephone, email, virtual, and in-person supports:  
      • Assessment of client needs ;  
      • Ongoing emotional support, advocacy, and information about Victim’s Rights and the Criminal Justice System;  
      • Information gathering and case updates;
        • Liaise with relevant parties (crown and police, etc.);
      • Assist with Emergency Protection Orders and Restraining Orders;  
      • Sexual Violence Reporting (review of options);  
        • Police accompaniment;
      • Court preparation; 
        • Review of legal processes with client (beginning with police engagement through to testimony) what to expect, role of client, emotions regulation etc.;  
      • Crown accompaniment;  
      • Court accompaniment;  
      • Short-term post-court support;  
  • Case Management:
    • Case notes, documentation of collateral contact (crown, police, victim service units, etc.) in ACAA’s file management software 
    • Information gathering and resourcing on behalf of client;  
    • Maintains accurate documentation in OWL Practice and confidentiality of records and information
  • Collaborative Work: 
    • Consultations as required;  
    • Participate in Camrose Police Service and RCMP Sexual Assault File Reviews as appropriate and directed;  
    • Attend staff meetings, community and provincial network meetings, and remains updated on current literature and direction (e.g. restorative justice), and where appropriate, adapt practices and skills to reflect changes as determined by the Executive Director and team Lead(s);  
  • Other appropriate duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Post-secondary degree in social work, psychology, or related field;
  • 2 to 3 years related work experience in crisis intervention and support;
  • Ability to work with the effects of sexual violence on individuals and communities;
  • Ability to travel within part of the region (services are provided within East Central Alberta, including the communities of Camrose, Stettler, Drumheller, Hanna, Castor, Coronation and surrounding areas)
    • Must own, properly register and insure own vehicle
    • Possess a valid Alberta Class 5 Drivers License and provide Driver’s Abstract annually
  • Satisfactory professional, Child Intervention Checks (Vulnerable Sector) and Police Information Checks provided to ACAA prior to start date

  • Has an understanding of the criminal justice system and experience in database management
