Nova Scotia Hospice Palliative Care Association (“NSHPCA”) is a mission-driven community-based organization dedicated to providing support and care throughout the trajectory of serious illness. NSHPCA is the provincial organization responsible for implementing and delivering community-based Advanced Care Planning for Nova Scotia, and a key player in coordinating existing grief-related resources. Currently led by a dedicated and hard-working board of directors, the organization has historically relied on valuable volunteers and partners to achieve its mission and coordinate resources in the community.


NSHPCA has been awarded a long-term contract as a Community Hub Organization, to play a centralized coordination and supportive role for the new Nova Scotia Community Grief and Emotional Wellness Model.  As a result of this expanded mandate, NSHPCA is seeking an Executive Director to steward the organization through an exciting time of evolution and growth.

Ideally, you have familiarity working in or with non-profit or health sectors. Experience with or a broad awareness of grief, bereavement, and emotional wellness support and management would be considered an asset.


With a strong understanding of organizational planning and development, you navigate intricate challenges with ease, leveraging your attention to detail and strategic acumen. You have demonstrated success in building and fostering a team environment where ambitious goals are pursued and achieved. You are a skilled communicator and have experience interacting and engaging with a diverse range of audiences, including the public and the media. You have an unwavering dedication to NSHPCA's mission of achieving comfort and peace for persons throughout Nova Scotia who are living with and dying of a life-threatening illness. You also believe deeply in NSHPCA's commitment to promoting the philosophy and principles of palliative care through networking, public and professional education, and advocacy. Bilingualism in French and English is considered an asset.


Key Responsibilities/ What Does This Role Entail?

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will oversee the effective delivery of programs, notably the Nova Scotia Community Grief and Emotional Wellness Model, while building and continually enhancing NSHPCA's offerings to exceed the expectations of NSHPCA’s partners. The Executive Director will propel the organization's mission forward, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence. Critical to this is the ability to diversify revenue streams and ensure the financial sustainability of NSHPCA through fundraising and forging meaningful partnerships with key community partners.


The Executive Director oversees the day-to-day operational and financial management for the organization, this includes building out a new workforce, overseeing budgeting, financial reporting, and operational procedures. The Executive Director will cultivate strong networks, build broad awareness, and strategically position NSHPCA as the vital driver of collective action toward shared goals across Nova Scotia’s hospice, palliative, and grief ecosystem.
