Child Welfare Worker will provide recreational opportunities for children of all ages who are living in the Shelter or participating in the follow-up program, taking into account the emotional and physical needs of children who are victims and/or witnesses of violence.  This position also provides support to mothers by providing parent relief and assistance on group or family outings.

 

ABOUT YWCA TORONTO – WOMEN’S SHELTER

YWCA Women’s Shelter provides safe and secure emergency shelter for women and gender diverse people and their children who are fleeing violence.  The shelter is staffed 24 hours a day and supports 9 families and two single participants.  In addition to shelter, families are offered case management support and enriching group and community activities to help them deal with the trauma they have experienced and begin to establish lives that are free of violence.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plans and implements children’s and parent/child activities;
  • Maintains the safety of children participating in activities organized by the YWCA Women’s Shelter;
  • Oversees the physical environment for children’s activities, ensuring that the spaces are clean and safe at all times;
  • Participates with the staff team in providing services to families;
  • Maintains confidentiality of all resident information;
  • Ensures that relevant information is communicated between residents and other shelter staff;
  • Completes administrative tasks as required;
  • Provides a positive role model for children;
  • Participates in training opportunities by or through the YWCA around issues of violence and impact on children; legal and ethical requirements regarding reporting a child in need of protection under the Child and Family Services Act; community and recreation resources in Toronto and the Women’s Shelter; and YWCA policies and practices;
  • Assists with other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently studying towards a Degree or Diploma in a related field, including Social Work, Psychology, Early Childhood Education and Child and Youth Worker;
  • Experience working with children of a variety of ages;
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills and verbal and written communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to provide oversight of children;
  • Ability to work in an anti-oppression and feminist framework.

Note: This a Full-Time, contract position for 8 weeks. All Canada Summer Jobs end date is August 31, 2024

 

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Eligible applicant must:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period;
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment;
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

*The youth must be 15 years of age at the beginning of the employment period. The youth may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period as long as the youth was 30 at the beginning of the employment period.

 

**International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada. Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible.

 

Vaccination Policy: In accordance with YWCA Toronto’s COVID-19 Vaccination Policy, all YWCA Toronto employees, students and volunteers are strongly encouraged to obtain all COVID-19 vaccinations and booster doses as recommended by Toronto Public Health.
