About the Role
At Family Services of Greater Vancouver, we’ve been helping people in crisis since 1928. As a non-profit, we help people develop skills and knowledge, empowering our neighbours to create positive change in their lives. Our team is made up of more than 420 staff, including expert counselors and support workers who provide compassionate, client-centered care to youth experiencing homelessness, families and children impacted by trauma, victims of domestic violence, and other vulnerable people from an evidence-based, trauma-informed lens. Working within the mission, vision, values, and person-centered philosophy of the Agency, the Health and Safety Specialist is the key point of contact for Agency leaders, and employees regarding health and safety issues.   Working as part of the HR team, this role supports the Agency across diverse program areas providing strategic health, safety, and wellness guidance, initiatives, and advice. This work will support and inform Human Resources oversight of the people strategy at the Agency. This position partners with teams, providing proactive support, planning, and visiting program sites to connect with staff.  The role works with employees to triage their health, safety, disability management, wellness issues, and queries. The position works collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to optimize and support the mental and physical health, safety, and wellness of our staff, volunteers, contractors, and clients.  It actively supports the Agency’s awareness and goals around diversity and inclusion.

Work Hours: 28 hours per week (4 days a week, and optional hybrid for in office and work from home)
 
Salary: MGS 5 Step 1, $39.81/ hour
 
Location: #301- 1638 E Broadway, Vancouver, BC  (Head Office)
(This role requires the candidate to be available to work at a number of FSGV sites located within the Greater Vancouver area)

What you bring:
Education, Training, Experience
  • Undergraduate degree or a diploma in the field of occupational health and safety, and a minimum of 3 years of experience as a health and safety professional in an advisor role, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Level 1 Occupational First Aid ticket or higher
  • WHMIS training and certification
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation
  • Knowledge of best practices related to disability management
  • A strong commitment to excellence in customer service; excellent communication skills: oral, written, interpersonal
  • Experience identifying needs, planning, and giving advice and guidance on initiatives that support strategic directions
  • Ability to train (formal and informal) and to provide sound professional advice and direction for health and safety related matters to various levels of the organization
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and analytical abilities
  • Proficiency with computer literacy with word processing, spreadsheet and/ or database
  • A committed ability to keep informed about evolving trends and practices, share knowledge, and support leaders and staff to integrate innovation into their health and safety practices
  • Well-developed planning, coaching, and teamwork skills
Additional Requirements
  • Successful completion of criminal record check
  • Proof of Covid-19 vaccination status will be required
