Who we are

Children are at the front and centre of what we do; they are the foundation of our purpose and the basis for our evidence-driven strategy. Our mission is to transform the lives of children, youth and their families by developing and delivering innovative, research-based mental health and early learning programs. At the Child Development Institute (CDI), we are passionate about helping our communities' most vulnerable members and their caregivers. It motivates each of us to face what can be difficult situations while continuously finding the purest joy in play, in silence, in advice, and in the unbelievable strength and resilience of our young clients. Joining us now is a rewarding opportunity to be part of an organization that is built on a legacy of more than 100 years of helping children and families.

Recognized as a leader and model for measurement-based impact, we are client-centred, family-centred, and data-informed. We are a place where professionals grounded in mental health, care, and well-being of infants, children and youth, come together in collaboration, learning and inclusion. As a multiservice organization delivering social, emotional, and behavioural counselling services, early childhood education, learning disabilities and mental health services, and family violence services, we address the whole person from when they begin their life. Every child and family that reaches out to us is unique, and we value and embrace their individuality. We deliver the tailored support and tools they need to build life-long skills, positive mental health, and resilience. With their trust in us, we guide children and families along a supportive journey. It is an often difficult path and simultaneously the most rewarding experience for providers, children and families.

Who we need

Reporting to the Human Resources Business Partner, we are seeking a Human Resources Generalist for a 12-month contract to play a critical role focused on supporting the growth of our team, in a combined unionized and non-unionized environment. As our new HR Generalist your key focus will include recruitment and selection, onboarding and off-boarding, HR record management, and HR administration.

This is an onsite in-office role.

Who you are

You may currently be an HR Coordinator looking to progress your career or a Talent Acquisition Coordinator looking to make the move into a Generalist HR role. You are an open and flexible communicator, able to work across all levels of teams. You are highly organized and can balance a high volume of work that comes in peaks and valleys. You are driven to work quickly and efficiently, always keeping track of the details and responding quickly when there are issues.

What's in it for you

Profound purpose and impact. We are a nonprofit organization that supports the most vulnerable members of our communities across a diverse range of backgrounds. This is a chance to bring your HR process and administrative knowledge to build and support our teams so they can support their clients.

Exposure. This is a chance to learn and grow working in a unionized environment, gaining insights into collective agreement and bargaining. It's an opportunity to bridge recruitment and HR generalist responsibilities, accessing training across the function, including payroll. The depth of the skills you build here will prepare you for the next level of your career.

As our HR Generalist, you will:

  • Support and coordinate the end-to-end recruitment process. You will execute and optimize our agency-wide talent acquisition process to ensure that we are hiring within approved parameters and in adherence to agency policy and collective agreements. You will update recruitment activities regularly per department procedure to meet goals. You will conduct background checks, prepare offers of employment for selected candidates per approved terms and conditions, and oversee all aspects of the onboarding process, including delivery of orientations. In addition, you will assist with the Performance Review process (annual, probationary) and yearly policy review and ensure compliance with employment-related legislation and practices.
  • Nurture collaboration. You will establish relationships with hiring managers to understand the scope of hiring needs and the unique aspects of every role. You will partner with our Talent Acquisition team or work in tandem with internal staff to execute strategic recruitment solutions to meet all recruiting goals.
  • Support HR. You will play an active role in fostering our positive and collaborative working environment, supporting leaders and staff in interpreting and administering organizational policies, procedures, and programs. You will maintain employee records. In addition, you will work collaboratively with the team wherever needed, from administrative tasks to payroll to assisting in developing and implementing policies and procedures.
  • Continuously learn. You will immerse yourself in the company's values and strategy. You will participate in continuous quality improvement processes and assist the Human Resources department with research and development of best practices.

You have:

  • The experience. You have exposure to the end-to-end recruitment process. From verifying job descriptions and completing all required forms to welcoming new hires, you are comfortable working with hiring managers and candidates to guide them through the process. You are meticulous and organized, and you can simultaneously manage multiple requests and initiatives. You understand the need to exercise extreme discretion with sensitive and confidential information.
  • The knowledge. You are familiar with provincial labour legislation, human rights codes, occupation health and safety guidelines, and Labour relations.
  • The integrity. You have the patience to interact with people sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally. You hold yourself and the organization you work for to the highest standards of accountability. You are detail-oriented and can balance competing priorities. You look for gaps and identify opportunities to introduce processes to increase efficiencies and build capacity.
  • The technical skills. You have proficiency with MS Office suite (i.e. Outlook, Word, Excel & PowerPoint). Experience working with Dayforce as an HRIS would be an asset.
  • The interpersonal skills. You have professional communication skills. You can build trust and influence decisions. You are a dedicated and flexible team player who can interact with team members and colleagues at all levels of the organization. You have a demonstrated ability to work in a respectful manner with groups from diverse backgrounds and experiences.

Other requirements:

  • All applicants are advised that offers of employment are contingent upon the successful completion of a Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Credential verifications and references are required.
  • As a condition of employment, you must provide updated COVID vaccinations in compliance with the CDI Mandatory Vaccination Policy.
