About Us

The Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) has been an animal welfare leader in the Edmonton community since 1907. We strive to be a model of excellence in the advancement of animal welfare and to lead the movement in creating a more humane world. EHS is a safe haven for thousands of homeless animals each year, providing veterinary treatment, behavioral rehabilitation, care, enrichment, and rehoming. Beyond animal sheltering, we engage with the community through various programs and services to support happy, lifelong bonds between people and pets.

The Role

The summer camp counselors are expected to engage youth through presentations and activities to build lifelong compassion and empathy for companion animals through summer day camp programming. Camp counselors should strive to create a safe, inclusive, and fun environment for all individuals involved in the camps.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

Responsibility 1: Supervision and Education

  • Supervising up to 25 children for all camps: maintaining an approximate ratio of 15:1 camper to counselor.
  • Leading activities and providing instruction to children.
  • Preparing supplies for each activity.
  • Ensuring all children are signed in and signed out from camp each day, following procedures.
  • Managing child behavior, as needed.

Responsibility 2: Maintaining Education Space

  • Preparing, cleaning, and maintaining the Education Classroom and Learning Annex spaces.
  • Monitoring inventory and notifying the Supervisor if supplies are low.

Education & Requirements

  • High School diploma, or equivalent
  • Aged 18 and older

·         Minimum 2 years experience in a customer service role; experience in recreation, child care, camp, or an education setting is preferred.

·         Minimum 1-year experience working with children in a group setting.

  • Standard First Aid with CPR and AED certification is required.
  • Clear and current Police Security Check with the Vulnerable Sector.

·         Comfort and prior experience in handling cats, dogs, and small animals.

Skills & Abilities

As the ideal candidate, you will have a passion for children and animals.  You have excellent communication skills and enjoy working independently with little supervision. You have the ability to use positive techniques to ensure positive behaviors.

 

In addition, you possess the ability to lead, organize, and supervise timed programs effectively while being responsible for multiple tasks. You will demonstrate the ability to lead and organize children’s activities while creating a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming environment. You have keen attention to detail with the ability to identify and minimize risks and adjust programming accordingly.

Compensation & Hours

  • Compensation: EHS offers a strong work-life balance.
  • Hours: 40 hours a week; however, is expected to work hours as required to fulfill department responsibilities. Some evenings and weekends may be required.
