Job Title: Shelters Health Care Aide (HCA)

Based at: Herb Jamieson Center (10014-105A Ave NW),

Reports to: Nursing Clinic Coordinator/ Shelters Daytime Coordinator

Hours of work: 12 hours (4 on 4 off) shift work (full-time)

Job Summary: To support shelter staff with the management of ADL and iADLs of clients within the shelter setting  

  • Assist with showering
  • Assist with grooming and dressing
  • Assist with other hygiene activities
  • Vital signs (must report to nurse) 
  • Lice management 
  • Report health concerns to nursing staff 
  • Basic wound care 
  • BLOC management 
  • Advocate for the client’s wellbeing 
  • Medication organization in the shelter

Description: The Health Care Aide works under the shelter preview and will be autonomous in much of their work. However, as an unregulated worker, the Health Care Aide will report client concerns to the Registered Nurse (RN), Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN), or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the Hope Mission Nursing Clinic. The Health Care Aide will only complete restricted activities under the supervision of an RN, RPN, or LPN within the shelter.  

As a Health Care Aide (HCA), you are responsible for providing personal assistance, supporting activities of daily living and providing comfort and support services to clients who require short-term assistance or ongoing support. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality client-centered care while reflecting the values of Hope Mission.

Minimum Qualifications and Skills:

  • HCA certificate (indicating they completed a certified HCA course)
  • Ability to manage people and manage a team
  • 2 years of work experience is an asset
  • Ability to Communicate effectively with clients, and conflict resolution skills
  • Administrative and organizational abilities
  • Ability to exercise authority without intimidation
  • Self-management skills

Other Requirements:

  • Being a Christian Organization, we require our employees to be in agreement and sign the Hope Mission Statement of Faith.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada on a full-time basis.
  • Able to provide Criminal Record Checks and Vulnerable Sector Search
  • A letter of reference from a ministry or church is an asset
  • Adherence to Hope Mission’s Policies and Procedures.
