Farmers for Climate Solutions (FCS) is a farmer and rancher-led national coalition working to scale up climate solutions in agriculture. We advance policy proposals to Canadian governments to better support farmers and ranchers to reduce emissions and build resilience and we encourage farmers and ranchers to adopt climate-friendly practices through the Farm Resilience Mentorship (FaRM) Program.
FCS is seeking a Senior Policy Analyst to help conduct federal policy research and analysis on climate and agriculture, participate in the development of policy tools for advocacy (ex: reports, documents, briefings and surveys), help support sector engagement on policy priorities, and support in government relations. Our farmer and rancher-led, solutions-oriented approach, and distinct voice is helping to shift the needle on climate change in agriculture in Canada. This is an opportunity to work with partners across Canada to advance policy solutions that support low emissions, high resilience farming and ranching.
The description below describes the mandate of the Senior Policy Analyst, and the experience/qualifications needed to succeed in the job. If you possess approximately 80 percent of the essential experience/qualifications, we encourage you to apply.
The Senior Policy Analyst will report to the Policy Director and collaborate with the rest of the FCS team to fulfill the following mandate:
Conducting research on emerging policy priorities in Climate and agriculture
Analyzing key government, industry, and international reports and publications on climate and agriculture, and synthesizing key findings for integration into FCS policy work
Supporting and facilitating the work of FCS farmer-led, expert Task Forces to make evidence-based policy recommendations
Supporting in the development, analysis and dissemination of results from FCS-led polls, surveys and other data collection tools.
Experience/qualifications
Post-secondary degree or diploma in a related field (ESSENTIAL)
5-7 years experience in a professional environment in a related field (ESSENTIAL)
Experience reviewing, analyzing, and providing advice on international, federal and provincial legislation, regulations, and policies (ESSENTIAL)
Strong understanding of Canadian policy, as it relates to agriculture and climate change (ESSENTIAL)
A strong interest in and understanding of research on climate change, agronomy, agricultural economics, and behavioural social science in agriculture (ESSENTIAL)
Up-to-date understanding of the diversity of Canadian agriculture, and opportunities and challenges for climate action (ESSENTIAL), especially on the prairies (ASSET)
Ability to communicate clearly and compellingly in written and verbal English (ESSENTIAL) and French (ASSET)
Experience researching, synthesizing and analyzing complex information, tailoring messages to diverse audiences, and strategically integrating research findings into policy priorities (ESSENTIAL)
Capacity to work in a fast-paced environment and to react quickly to new opportunities,priorities, and risks or threats (ESSENTIAL)
A sharp eye for detail (ESSENTIAL)
Co-developing policy tools like reports, latest reports summaries, briefing notes, articles, consultant submissions, presentations, etc.
Supporting in preparing policy briefings for FCS members
Helping monitor and evaluate success of advocacy tools and projects, and adapt accordingly
Experience/qualifications
Experience developing policy material (briefing notes, etc.) for various audiences with clear, concise and accessible language, while supporting the organization’s unique position and voice (ESSENTIAL)
Experience analyzing statistical information and integrating relevant information in policy material (reports, briefing notes, etc.) (ASSET)
Experience in monitoring, evaluation and learning of policy tools and projects (ASSET)
Supporting and facilitating member engagement on policy through the Policy Working Group
Helping support members in provincial Government Relations where necessary, in particular leading up to the next Agriculture Policy Framework negotiations (2027-2028).
Building and maintaining relationships with, and effectively communicating FCS priorities to, key sector and industry partners and stakeholders.
Experience/qualifications
Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and partners towards a common goal (ESSENTIAL)
Strong skills in engaged listening, diplomacy (ESSENTIAL)
Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships and build bridges among partners with diverse views and opinions (ESSENTIAL)
Awareness and understanding of the diversity of challenges, values, and needs of farmers & ranchers, farming communities and farming organizations in Canada (ASSET)
Experience reaching and engaging with academics, farmers, agricultural stakeholder, policy experts and government representatives (ASSET)
Supporting the Director of Policy, Board and farmer leaders and others in government relations, including preparing for Senate and House committee appearances, responding to consultations, contributing to budget recommendations
Helping maintain and build network across the political spectrum to ensure government contacts are up to date with FCS priorities
Organizing virtual and in-person lobbying events
Experience/qualifications
A strong understanding of Canadian governments and the ways in which they work (ASSET)
Experience working with government and in government relations (ASSET)
Coordinating policy work with FCS communications, field programming and strategic initiatives teams
Contributing policy content to funder reports
Taking notes and minutes at meetings
Helping define and draft consultant scopes of work and contracts
Performing other duties to support and advance the work of FCS as required
Experience/qualifications
Ability to manage work and deadlines independently, and collaborate with a team and diverse stakeholders, ensuring colleagues are informed and able to contribute as needed (ESSENTIAL)
Solid computer skills and experience using Google Workspace and Zoom (ESSENTIAL)
Experience in keeping accurate and detailed meeting notes and records (ESSENTIAL)
Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing project needs and priorities (ESSENTIAL)
Available to travel occasionally for meetings, retreats or trainings (ASSET)
This is a full time contractual position until September, 2026 with possibility of renewal should additional funding be secured. You must be based in and have the legal right to work in Canada. Benefits available for this position include:

Salary of $77,326.95, per annum with annual wage step increase to a top step of $84,137.55

FCS staff work remotely from locations across Canada. Staff require reliable internet service that allows for smooth online video and audio communication. FCS staff receive a computer, a contribution to a phone plan, and other support to facilitate work from home.
