About Us:
Kate Booth House is a short-term, confidentially located transition house providing safe shelter for up to 25 women and children at risk of violence. Residential services and a crisis line are offered 24 hours a day throughout the year, to give support and advocacy to help women and children regain their self-esteem and rebuild their lives.
We provide food, shelter, clothing, personal care items, children’s toys, and all the necessities to bring comfort to survivors of violence. We offer weekday children’s programs, school tutoring, child care, women’s individual and group support, and spiritual care.
The Role:
The Chaplain provides a holistic religious and spiritual atmosphere serving clients and staff from a wide variety of backgrounds and faith traditions. The successful applicant will provide support and spiritual care to our residents, maintaining a safe, trauma-informed, and welcoming space for those in crisis situations. As the Chaplain you will be part of the leadership team and a wider team that works together to make a tangible difference in the lives of our residents.
Hours:
Weekend and Weekday shifts (25hrs per week) (Schedule can be determined in coordination with Executive Director to best match needs of residents and availability of Chaplain)
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct services and bible discussion groups and provide additional Christian-based programming as required by the religious and spiritual needs of Kate Booth House and Esther’s Place clients and staff.
Develop and maintain therapeutic one-to-one connections in order to provide pastoral counselling and spiritual care for clients and staff, including crisis support as required, to women from a wide variety of backgrounds, cultures, and faiths.
As a member of the leadership team, participate in operational issues and case management, promoting spiritual care perspectives in the overall care plans for clients.
Develop and implement a program plan. Set goals and objectives
Develop and implement spiritual and religious care policies and procedures.
Evaluate program effectiveness on an ongoing basis and use creativity in developing, adapting and expanding programs and spiritual care approaches.
Liaise with multi-faith community leaders and groups as required to meet the diverse spiritual and religious needs of clients.
Perform spiritual care intakes and assessments for clients and document follow-up, to ensure that the spiritual and religious needs of clients are met on a timely basis.
Assesses client’s spiritual needs and assist in using faith in dealing with loss, trauma, and stress.
Provide critical incident debriefing for staff if needed.
Occasionally assist with food preparation for meals and shift coverage if needed.
Mediate conflict/violence within the house if it occurs.
Regular responsibility for the emergency phone for out-of-hours on-call support (on a rotating schedule).
Qualifications:
*NOTE: For some jobs, you may be required to provide validated educational documentation.
Post-secondary education in Pastoral Counseling, Religious Education or Biblical and Theological studies or equivalent professional experience/training/certification.
Being an ordained member of a Christian denomination or endorsement as a faith group leader by a Christian denomination’s authorizing body is an asset.
Valid First Aid/CPR level C and FOODSAFE Level 1 certificates (or willingness to obtain)
Experience:
1-3 years related work experience in Pastoral Care or Chaplaincy, preferably in a social service setting with experience working with women dealing with mental health issues, trauma, and domestic violence.
Skills/Knowledge:
Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
Knowledge of current rehabilitative practices/effective programming for women.
Knowledge of multi-faith issues and ability to assess religious and spiritual needs.
Strong leadership qualities and problem-solving skills.
Demonstrated ability to provide spiritual care to women with a faith tradition that is not one’s own.
Understanding of trauma-informed care and the situation of women (and their children) who have experienced violence in their intimate relationships
Ability to work with diverse groups of people (Kate Booth House serves all women and children who are victims of abuse regardless of race, colour, religion, marital status, sexual orientation, or age)
Criminal Record Check for working with children and vulnerable adults (or willingness to obtain)
Valid BC driver’s license preferred
Nonviolent conflict intervention training preferred
Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:
Background check consent
A clear vulnerable sector screening
A clean drivers abstract
Completion of our online Armatus Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training
