About the Role

At Family Services of Greater Vancouver, we’ve been helping people in crisis since 1928. As a non-profit, we help people develop skills and knowledge, empowering our neighbours to create positive change in their lives. Our team is made up of more than 420 staff, including expert counsellors and support workers who provide compassionate, client-centred care to youth experiencing homelessness, families and children impacted by trauma, victims of domestic violence, and other vulnerable people from an evidence-based, trauma-informed lens. The Family Counselor at Vancouver Family Preservation and Reunification provides services primarily to families that promote healthier family functioning and linkages to community resources. This position provides a variety of parenting education, support and counselling to children and families referred by the Ministry of Children and Family Development.

Work Hours: 17.5 hours per week with flexible work hours. 

Salary: Starting at GS 13 Step 1 $37.51 per hour

What you bring:

 

Education, Training, Experience

  • Master's degree in social work or clinical counselling or equivalent education and experience
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Knowledge of child welfare policies and practices
  • Working knowledge of different parenting strategies and the ability to share these strategies with families
  • In-depth knowledge of child development and child abuse dynamics
  • An understanding of integrated case management/wrap-around service delivery
  • An understanding of child and adolescent stages of development
  • Superior crisis intervention skills
  • Ability to work with families that may present multiple service needs related to poverty, addictions, violence, child abuse or neglect, and mental health issues
  • Ability to provide counselling in a variety of approaches that best-fit client needs either in the office, in the community or in their homes
  • Actively supports the Agency’s awareness and goals around diversity, inclusion justice and equity.
  • Knowledge of computer operating systems, i.e. Microsoft Office 365, Excel, SharePoint, MS Teams

Additional Requirements

  • Class 5 Driver’s License and personal vehicle
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends when necessary
  • Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check
