Are you passionate about maintaining vibrant spaces and ensuring everything runs smoothly behind the scenes?  Join us as the Facility Operations Manager at the Vancouver Art Gallery, where you will play a pivotal role in keeping our stunning building in top shape!  Reporting to the Director of Facilities and Operations, you will lead a dynamic team in managing the gallery’s physical space, ensuring that our environment remains both welcoming and functional.  You will oversee everything from day-to-day maintenance and event support to the crucial systems that keep our building comfortable and safe.  Your expertise will help us provide an exceptional experience for our visitors while maintaining the highest standards for our collection. What You Will Do 

 

Operational

  • Lead daily facility operations and ensure satisfactory building services and departmental requests
  • Manage operations in line with Gallery policies and WorkSafe BC regulations, including safety inspections, training, and staff feedback
  • Develop and champion team plans, continuous improvement initiatives, and policies to support organizational goals
  • Communicate with team members to ensure a smooth experience for employees and guests
  • Compile and report necessary documentation, including operating and safety manuals
  • Develop and oversee maintenance programs for furniture, fixtures, and equipment
  • Identify and address risks, hazards, and deficiencies
  • Provide input on standards, policies, and procedures for engineering and building services
  • Plan and manage team staffing schedules and routines
  • Coordinate and prepare work orders for maintenance requests and contractor services
  • Monitor industry trends and advancements to enhance building operations

 

Leadership & Staffing

  • Recruit and train employees in a unionized environment, ensuring proper orientation
  • Evaluate staff performance, provide coaching, and handle disciplinary actions with support from the People & Culture team
  • Promote equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace including Indigenous ways of being

 

Financial Management

  • Collaborate with the Director of Facilities and Operations to create and manage the departmental budget
  • Monitor budget expenditures, recommend corrective actions, and adhere to financial procedures
  • Purchase necessary supplies and equipment within budget constraints

 

This role contributes to the overall success of the Building Services team and ensures that all processes and operations contribute to the Gallery’s strategic direction and the divisional goals.

 

What You Bring to the Role

 

You have a minimum of three to five years of relevant leadership experience, including extensive professional experience and comprehensive knowledge in managing a building operations department including building systems, facility operations, maintenance and mechanical/electrical principles, process and procedures, physical asset inventory and control procedures.  Experience in a non-profit or customer service focused organization is an asset.  Fifth Class Power Engineering Certification or higher is preferred.

 

Additional skills and abilities:

  • Experience with monitoring, tracking, and controlling projects, and evaluating plans for critical improvements
  • Skilled in recruiting, training, and motivating staff, with experience leading teams and contractors; Unionized environment experience is a plus
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills, including coaching and negotiating
  • Ability to understand priorities, adhere to deadlines, and handle emergencies on a rotational basis
  • Proficiency in CMMS/Work Order Management (preferred), and intermediate knowledge of Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Capability to develop financial analyses and reports
  • Comprehensive knowledge of WHMIS, WorkSafe BC, and Occupational Health and Safety requirements
  • Creative and innovative thinking with a focus on continuous improvement and best practices

Compensation and Work Environment

 

This is an excluded (non-unionized), permanent role. The compensation package is commensurate with qualifications, experience, and ability.  This is an in-office position at the Gallery’s downtown Vancouver location.

 

Hours:  Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week

 

Salary:  $80,000 - $95,000 per year
