Director of Finance (Full-time, Permanent) 
 
Location: Our office is located in Toronto, Ontario.  This position can be located anywhere in the Greater Toronto Area with flexible / hybrid work arrangements available.
 
Reports to: Chief Operations Officer
 
Hiring Range: $110,000 - $125,000 annually, including a comprehensive benefits plan, pension plan, 3 weeks paid vacation, increasing to 4 weeks paid vacation in your second year of employment, a December break (usually a week) to recharge, wellness days, access to an Employee Assistance Program and professional development opportunities

About the position:
 
The Director of Finance is a key leadership role responsible for ensuring the financial leadership, sustainability, integrity, and compliance of Community Food Centres Canada. Working closely with the COO, Senior Leadership Team (SLT), the Board of Directors, Senior Management Team (SMT), finance team and other cross functional staff members, the Director of Finance will build a culture of fiscal responsibility and accountability, mitigate financial and legal risks, ensure compliance with legislative requirements and safeguard the organization’s assets. This role is responsible for strategic financial leadership, including developing and reporting on fiscal strategic objectives and related goals within the strategic plan. The Director of Finance oversees the development and implementation of financial policies, procedures, and risk management tools, ensuring that all financial operations align with the organization’s vision, mission, values, and strategic goals.
 
Key Responsibilities:
 
Financial Leadership
  • Collaborate with the COO, SLT, SMT,  and the finance team to foster a culture of fiscal sustainability and accountability across the organization
  • Develop and report on finance strategic objectives and related goals within the strategic plan
  • Develop and update the annual and multi-year financial plan for the organization including budget, financial goals and associated ratios and key performance indicators, reserve and treasury strategies,  and proactively identify, assess, and mitigate financial and legal risks to the organization
  • Assist and act as an advisor to the Senior Leadership Team,  including the COO and CEO with strategic business decisions.
 
Budgeting and Financial Reporting
  • Develop multi-year budgets using true cost accounting, forecast projections and analysis, including scenario planning and analysis of each revenue source
  • Lead the development of the organization’s annual operating budget and forecast preparation
  • Manage capital and operating reserves
  • Support SLT and SMT with their preparation of budgets under their authority
  • Develop an analysis of programs that are break-even or deficit to support revenue targets
  • Develop and implement cash flow analysis  procedures, and forecasting to strengthen cash flow management 
  • Oversee cash and credit management, banking relationships, including investments, and securities 
  • Review and manage capital and operating reserves
  • Ensure timely and accurate monthly and quarterly internal financial reporting and analysis to support informed decision-making by the SLT and Board of Directors.
  • Responsible for drafting quarterly financial narrative reports including a summary analysis and actions required
 
Internal Controls and Risk Management
  • Safeguard the organization’s assets by implementing and maintaining robust internal controls and procedures across all relevant areas
  • Responsible for the development, review, and updating of financial policies and internal controls
  • Monitor for adherence of policies and internal controls across the organization.
 
Audit and Compliance
  • Oversee the annual audit process, serving as the primary liaison with the organization’s external audit firm and the Finance and Audit Committee of the Board
  • Prepare or approve the working papers required by the Auditor
  • Ensure accurate and timely filing of the T3010 form and other regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain full compliance with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) requirements, the Income Tax Act, and Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI).
  • Ensure timely submission of required payroll deductions
 
Digital Transformation, Finance and Accounting Systems
  • Responsible for updating, selecting, and safeguarding the finance and accounting systems in alignment with organizational digital transformation strategy
  • Leverage technology to continue to streamline accounting, bookkeeping, and finance functions to support improved financial analysis and to support data driven decision making.
 
Cross functional Collaboration & Support
  • Collaborate with the Programs and and Development departments to meet the financial requirements of grants and funding agreements
  • Provide financial expertise and guidance to support program delivery and fund development initiatives
  • Oversee payroll function and support Human Resources with employment related matters
  • Support the Development team with fundraising plans and review of the capital project.
 
Board Liaison and Governance Support
  • Working closely with the COO and the CEO, support the stewardship of the Board of Directors to ensure the board is meeting its governance and fiduciary duties
  • Support the annual work plan for the Board and its committees, including the Finance and Audit Committee
  • Prepare and distribute materials for board meetings, ensuring timely and accurate minuting of all Board and committee meetings
  • Collaborate with the Senior Leadership Team to follow-up on action items.
 
Qualifications & Skills:
 
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in financial management and leadership, preferably in a not-for-profit organization.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field; CPA designation preferred.
  • Experience working for a fundraising and grant making organization will be an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of CRA regulations, the Income Tax Act, and PCI compliance.
  • Proven experience in budgeting, financial reporting, and audit processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement and maintain effective internal controls and financial policies.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate financial and budget concepts effectively and collaborate with other non-financial teams.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and external collaborators.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to lead, inspire, guide, motivate, develop and retain high-performing and diverse teams, with a vision for department change, growth and future needs.
