Toronto Women in Action Project Support Worker

Full-Time Contract Until March 2026

 

For almost 50 years Nellie’s has been providing shelter and support for marginalized women and their children in the Greater Toronto Area. We are mandated to operate programs and services for women and children who had or are experiencing violence, poverty, and homelessness. Nellie’s works to lessen homeless for women and their children whether the cause is family violence, mental health, or any other reason that results in dealing with the impact from trauma. In addition to providing shelter, our programs are designed to reduce the isolation that often comes with abuse.

 

Our core operations involve our 38-bed emergency shelter for women and their children who are homeless or escaping violent situations. In addition to our shelter, Nellie’s operates Community Support and Outreach programs that provides after care support and follow-up services to women and their children after they leave the shelter, as well as transitional housing support for women living in the community who are homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless.

 

Nellie’s is currently looking to hire a Full Time Toronto Women in Action (TWA) Project Support Worker. The TWA Project Support Worker will assist the Housing Advocacy Coordinator in the delivery of housing advocacy initiatives, community engagement efforts, and administrative tasks. The role involves working closely with community members, partners, and stakeholders to ensure smooth execution of housing-related projects and initiatives. This position supports both program delivery and logistical operations, contributing to the mission of promoting affordable housing and civic engagement.

This position requires flexibility, as some evening or weekend hours may be necessary to support community events. The Support Worker will play a critical role in helping the Housing Advocacy Coordinator implement successful programs and initiatives that advance affordable housing and civic engagement efforts across the community.

JOB SUMMARY/DESCRIPTION

Program Support

  • Assist the Coordinator in organizing and delivering housing advocacy programs and events.
  • Help plan and facilitate workshops that educate and empower community members on housing issues.
  • Provide logistical support for community training, civic engagement activities, and advocacy events.
  • Help coordinate advocacy group meetings, protests, and municipal council attendance with peers and community members.
  • Assist in gathering and incorporating community feedback for the development of strategic action plans for housing solutions.

Community Engagement

  • Support the facilitation of community engagement efforts, liaising with residents, peer groups, and advocacy teams.
  • Assist in building and maintain relationships with community members, mentors, and partners to advance advocacy goals.
  • Coordinate outreach efforts to involve diverse community groups in housing initiatives, civic engagement events, and educational programs.
  • Help organize and participate in meetings with key City staff, City counselors, and stakeholders to address housing issues and gather feedback.

Symposium And Event Support

  • Provide logistical and administrative support for the housing symposium planning, including organizing materials, secure venues, and coordinating event schedules.
  • Assist in outreach efforts for the symposium, helping to engage in stakeholders and promote community participation.
  • Help with day-of-event coordination, ensuring smooth operations and participation.

Administrative Support

  • Assist in managing schedules, coordinating meetings, and tracking progress on projects for the coordinator.
  • Handle day-to-day administrative tasks such as maintaining records, reports, and other resources needed for program and advocacy initiatives.
  • Support the development of promotional materials, reports, and other resources needed for the program and advocacy initiatives.
  • Assist with grant applications, funding reports, and budget tracking under the supervision of the Coordinator.

Communication

  • Assist in the coordination and dissemination of information across project stakeholders and partners.
  • Help maintain regular communication with community partners, residents, and City staff about ongoing TWA initiatives.
  • Support the creation of plain-language materials for community members to ensure accessibility of key information.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post-secondary education and/or at least two years of relevant work experience
  • Fluency in English is essential (oral and written).
  • Fluency in another language is an asset
  • In-depth understanding of systems of oppression related to intersectionality, systemic inequalities, power dynamics and their impacts on TWA membership and achieving equality.  
  • Strong workshop design and facilitation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to bring an intersectional feminist analysis to community engagement, policy and social change processes
  • Administrative and organizational skills, as well as familiarity with MS Office and Google Workspace
  • Ability to work independently and in a multidisciplinary team
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Knowledge of how city government works
  • Familiarity with local community organizations
  • Ability to work flexible hours; position may involve evening and weekend work

 

Hours: 35 hrs/week

Salary: $24/hour
